Bandito, named because the black on her face looked similar to
that of a masked bandit, was never supposed to be my cat because she
belonged to my daughter, but because of certain circumstances I was
asked to look after her for a year. However, the year led to many; a
total of 18 in all.
When we took Bandito in we already had a full grown cat which
did not appreciate the intrusion at all. However, over the years she
was accepted to some degree but never as a real friend.
When our older cat had to be put to sleep Bandito took it upon
herself to be mistress of the home. She was a good cat and had many
happy days with us and many interesting experiences. We had a very
large tree in the backyard and she found a special crook in a couple
of large branches and would often curl up and have a snooze in her
favorite spot.
I liked Bandito but we never really became that close until my
wife died in 1996 and it was then that Bandito became my real friend
and companion. She was getting older and it showed. She did not go
outside as much and I did little things in the home to make it
easier for her to get onto the chesterfield or a favorite chair.
After my wife died it was then that Bandito began to sleep
with me every night. She would always come up beside me and put her
little paws over my outstretched arm and purr to her hearts content
which showed her happiness and made me feel just as happy. She
certainly filled a void in my life after my wife died. We became the
closest of friends and I considered her my loyal and faithful friend
and companion.
We all know that one day life must end for all of us and of
course if we had our choice it would be a quick and merciful death.
However, often such is not the case. The day on which Bandito died
will live in my memory forever. She suffered a seizure and for five
hours from three in the morning until 8: a.m. when the vet’s
office opened she suffered the most horrible pain I have ever seen
an animal or a human suffer. How terrible to have to sit helplessly
by and be able to do nothing to alleviate her suffering.
I had made a pact with Bandito that, if and when the time came
that she had to be put to sleep that I would be there beside her to
tell her that I loved her so much and would miss her so. I don’t
know how I got the courage but when the vet suggested it I went and
I did comfort her as the procedure was done. I know that she knew me
and I know that she knew I was doing the best thing for her.
I agree with this anonymous quote:
‘No heaven not ever heaven will be, unless Bandito is there
to welcome me.’
Hopefully there is a rainbow bridge and one day we will be
together again. I look forward to that day with eagerness and
anticipation.
Farewell my beloved friend and companion.
