I
already had a small two year old dog named Joy, but I wanted her to
have a companion when I would be out, so I started to look for another
puppy, but they were all going to be too big for Joy.
My niece's husband, Rich, had been helping me look for another
dog. I told Rich I would
probably have to get a Yorkie, because they were about the size I
needed to get.
One
day in August 1991, Rich called me to say he had just seen a small dog
taken by the Humane Society from an apartment building because the
residents could not have a pet. Rich
asked the lady what kind of a dog it was and she said she thought it
was a Yorkie, so Rich said he had an aunt that was looking for a small
dog. She told him she had
to take it back to the office and if nobody adopted it, he would be
put to sleep. I told Rich
I really didn't want a male dog.
The
next day Rich walked into my house with the ugliest, stinkingest dog I
had ever seen. Also, he
was not a Yorkie, but would probably be twice the size of Joy.
Rich started to leave and I told him I didn't want the dog, but
Rich said it was an early birthday gift and he walked out.
I gave the dog a bath and tried to brush his hair, but it was
so matted that I couldn't brush him.
I called the groomer and said I had a new male dog that would
need his hair cut to the skin and I made an appointment to take him
the next morning. I was
asked his name, but, of course, I hadn't had time to even think of one
and the only thing I could come up with was Ugly.
Well,
after he was groomed, Ugly didn't really look ugly -- he was cute!
When my niece saw him that day she said he was a lucky dog
because he would have been put to sleep.
So, that day his name was changed to Lucky.
Lucky
was a lover -- he loved everybody he met and all the neighbors loved
him. Several years later
he had to have two knee operations, but other than that he was a
healthy dog.
Then
on March 8th, I found him dead on a chair in the living room.
He apparently had just passed away, because his body was still
warm. He looked so
peaceful, like he was sleeping. I
held him and told him how much I loved him and would miss him.
I called my niece and her and her husband came over.
It was ironic that Rich picked Lucky up at the Humane Society
and he was driving Lucky and me to the Humane Society to have Lucky
cremated.
Lucky,
my wonderful companion, friend and protector, what will I do without
you? There are so many
things I will miss:
Every
time I'd come home, I would find you at the door, wagging your tail
and howling with joy because Mommy was home;
Cleaning
your eyes and brushing your teeth every morning and then you running
to where the biscuits were kept;
Going
outside with me to get the newspaper every morning;
Telling
you that I was going for the mail and having you run around the corner
and meeting me by the mailbox;
How
much you loved to go for a ride in the car, wearing your harness and
strapped in with the seatbelt;
Throwing
your ball and having you bring it back to me to throw again and again
until one of us got tired of playing fetch;
When
I was working in the yard, seeing you watching me through the window;
Your
long beautiful eyelashes that I loved;
Sitting
next to me on the couch watching TV with your head on my lap and you
barking at the TV when an animal was on;
You
sleeping next to me on the bed every night.
There
are so many things that will remind me of you and all the good times
we had together. I just
wish it could have been for a longer period of time.
You were such a wonderful happy dog and had such a great
personality.
Joy
and I will miss you always. Until
we meet again at
Rainbow
Bridge--
Love
forever,
Mommy
