The purpose of this email is to help you install and configure windows 2000 Professional,
and to also map your drives to the server. As per the CEO the standard is now Windows 2000,
you cannot map drives to windows 2000 using windows 95/98.
If you have Windows NT 4.0 you can also map your drives, but again we are not using Windows NT 4.0.
I recommend that if you are going to Install windows 2000, you do it from
a freshly formatted hard drive. I will now give you a step by step instruction on formatting and
installing you new windows 2000.
Preparing for Installation:
You have received a CD-ROM from Chris, please insert it into your CD-ROM drive. This will start the auto installer, but we don't want to install windows 2000 at this time, so just click exit. You will need four blank floppy disks to create installation disk for windows 2000.
1. Click start and select Run from the start menu.
2. Select Browse a form will appear. At the top of this form will be drop down box, click on the arrow to expand the drop down box. Then find your CD-ROM drive in the list provided and select it by click it with your mouse.
3. After select your CD-ROM from the list you will see the list of files and folders change below the drop down box. In the list of files and folders you will see a folder named BOOTDISK, double click this folder and it will expand inside this folder you will see several files. you will need to click on MAKEBOOT, then select OK at the bottom of the form.
4. You will return to the original RUN form, but this time there be a directory listing in the drop down box that should look something like this.
EXAMPLE:
5. Click OK now and lets start making your boot disks, when this application starts to run it will prompt you for your disks one after another.
NOTE:
Don't remove the CD form the CD-ROM drive until after you have finish making your boot disks. You should also ensure that your floppy disk are formatted and blank as Windows 2000 make boot will hang up on you.
FORMATTING & INSTALLATION
1. Insert disk 1 from the four floppy disks that you just made, and turn your computer on, this will work for a bit then will ask you for disks two through four. As you insert the disks these disks will analysis your system and detect your hardware.
2. Windows 2000 boot disk will ask you were you want to install windows 2000, you will have to decide were you are going to install it.
3. You can select to install it on your C:\ drive or any other drive if you have another, you will also have the choose of leaving you current windows installation or deleting the partition and then re-partitioning and reformatting it to FAT32 or NTFS.
NOTE
I would recommend re-partition and reformatting your hard drive to NTFS, as the security that is offered is better. Also remember that most of the application that you have used in the pass with windows 95/98 will not work in windows 2000, so you will have to down load new drivers and purchase new update to your application.
4. After you have done this you are by the hard part, the only other screen that is of important is when you are asked if you want to connect to a network. You will want to select NO unless you have an internal network in your home.
5. If you have to select connect to a network, even though you don't have a network, install a Microsoft loop back adapter. This way we can trick windows into thinking that you have a network even though you don't. If you have a network then select the adapter that matches your card.
FINISHING UP
1. After you have finished installing windows 2000, you will need to install the drivers for your modem and any other device that you have attached to your computer.
MAPPING DRIVERS
1. On your desktop you will find an icon called My Network Places ,
right click this icon and a menu will appear like this click on the Map Network Drive.
2. Another form will appear that you will need to fill out select the Drive drop down box and change the drive letter to Z:, In the FOLDER drop down box type this \\24.42.157.110\work. After you have done this lower down this form you can see a check box that says Reconnect at logon leave this checked. Just below that is Connect using a different user name. this allow you to have your own profile on your computer but still connect to other computer system.
3. Click the Connect using a different user name this form will appear, in the User name textbox type staff and in the password textbox type wally58 and then click on.
4. You will return back to the original mapping form and then select Finish.
NOTE
When you are mapping a drive that is out on the internet ensure that you are connected to the internet or you will receive an error message and the drive will not map.
In closing I hope that this helps everybody, again I recommend that everybody format your hard drive to remove old versions of windows. As there has been problems with a dual boot system using windows 98. Don't take my word for it ask Chris after he reinstalled two different times. Also if you need updated drivers for you hardware you can either go to www.drivers.com or the windows update web site that is off your start menu.
