If something hurts you, it won't kill you; and if something kills you, it won't hurt you. This type of saying has an odd meaning, especially when people use it "out of context"
"Things that hurt you" means that you take the punishment constantly; so it doesn't kill you at all. "Things that kill you" causes an affect that you will not have you get hurt any more; which is also true. Those of us that say the phrase, "What ever doesn't kill me will make me stronger", is technically a truth. It is only true because it seems that when a person is given a certain amount of pain (not enough to kill, but still pain), the person seems to be able to tolerate more of it than he/she did before. This is how many people get "tougher" than others. If a person experiences pain, the mind of the person can learn from it. After time the mind is able to restrain the body from feeling the pain, whenever it is felt. Remember, all things happen for a purpose, and (technically) pain is a way of life. If there were no pain in the world, there would be no way to learn from any mistakes.
In theory, it is better to have pain and suffering than not having it at all. Those with little experience with pain will be more likely to have his/her "will" to be broken quicker than a person that has experienced pain. The "will" of a person is normally measured by the impact of his/her experiences, and by how much pain a person can take-in at once. This is why the military/army puts all of its own units through torcher sessions. This gives them the experience of the pain and gives them the ability to suffer through more. The more suffering they receive during training, the better chance when they feel the suffering in a mission, the person is able to not breakdown. This is necessary if the soldier is carrying important information that is not allowed to fall in the enemy's hands.
The "will" of a person has always determined the amount of pain the person can receive before he/she cannot take any more. The "will" of a person is the best thing that any person has that helps the person be more productive in any given workforce. The stronger "will" that the person have, the stronger the person is against sicknesses, etc. That type of resistance is always necessary no matter the job or environment that the person is working in. As long as the "will" is strong, the person is able to succeed more in life. This will allow the person no show that he/she can take a lot of punishment (verbally, or other), which would be great for a management type position.
