| It's not a racial issue by JoAnnbyrd |

I am a skinhead girl. Being a skinhead has so much behind it. So much I've bet you've heard before that writing it all down again would simply be repeating. "preaching to the converted" as my friends mom would say. To me, skinhead has become a way fo life, a choice I've made that has made my life most comfortable for myself- in other words, I've found something that matches my beliefs and in what life should be made of. Skinhead found ME. I's not something I practice every single day, It's something I wake up to. Now regarding the stereotype that EVERYONE exposed to the media and only the media is convinced skins are a hatred filled racist anti-establishment cult group. Each and every skin has their own beliefs and stances and may not make their beliefs stand for everyone elses in their crowd. You can NOT and should NOT judge a whole society f people by the actions of one individual. Just like any other subculture, skins have their small, yet still degrading share of gays, drug-abusers, constant brawlers, anti-govt. political activists, and such and such. This includes racists. I will not share my personal beliefs towards racism, but I will note that every society has their share of racists. Simply because Hitler was racist, certainly does not mean all Germans are racist. It is merely a personal view that each person has a right to have. If a black person asks me why I look the way I look, I do not say to them "it is because I am a skinhead", I simply explain it is a way I show a sign of my identity, a code of honor for what I stand for. Usually any kind of person would get the wrong idea after the telling them straight out I was a skin, asking me if I really was a nazi. I think you yourself should know what you stand for, be proud enough to exclaim it, but just like any other symbol bearers know (christians muslims org. memebrs) it is often a difficult task to explain to every single person the history of skinhead and the fact that not all skinheads are fascists. People are just to lazy, ignorant to care, but seem to love spreading false ideas that everyone with a shaved head is a racist haate-monger. oh well. |
