Tuxedo Mask's Profiles and Gallery
In the DiC dub, he is Darien and a right jerk at times.
Callous, cold, seemingly uncaring in most instances, more interested in spouting
encouraging words than jumping in and helping. And yet, still a mysterious figure,
handsome and suave,
and destined from time immemorial to be the love and beloved of Serenity, the moon
princess of the Silver Millenium.
In this time and this age, Mamoru has been reborn and as a small child lost his memory in
a fatal car crash that killed his parents. Even his name is one that was given to him in
the hospital - he holds no memories of his own. A high school
student, he studies to become a doctor - genetics and biology. A study in contrasts from
Usagi, who can't seem to pass a test if her life depended on it. Serious, studious, with a
firm grasp on reality, Mamoru seems the least likely match for the flighty Usagi.
And yet . . . and yet.
The contrasts between the manga and the anime are serious when it comes to Mamoru's
character - Naoko wrote him to be romantic, daring and strong - a rock for Usagi to lean
on and a bright wing for her to shelter under. In the anime,
Mamoru gets brainwashed or captured or generally abused too many times to count; a far cry
from the depth of character as portrayed in the original story. In the anime, frequently
he is ineffectual - in the beginning in particular he seems to
mostly stay out of the action and simply encourage the senshi from the sidelines. As
Tuxedo Kamen his attacks are a thrown rose (sometimes a barrage of them), a cane that can
extend to strike at a distance and the ability to fly.
The manga has no roses or the ability to fly, and only one scene where he uses a
cane. What he does have is something that is described as psychometry, which the
dictionary describes as:
divination of facts concerning an object from contact with it
The manga describes it slightly differently - Mamoru can touch something and receive
impressions about it, he can both heal and attack with a touch, when in contact with the
earth he can see what is happening far away from where he is.
And in the manga, Mamoru has the Golden Crystal (as Usagi has the Silver), an object of
potent force.
