" Okay, whoever you are, you can better give me all off your money!" Xanthos feels a knife on his throat but he can’t see anyone. Shocked he turns around but sees nothing.
" Hmm, and why should i do that? " His deep voice sounds sarcastic. He crosses his arms for his chest and laughs. " Since i can’t see you, i can’t fight you. So i have no choice then either to die or just give you my money. Now there is just one little problem. I don’t have any money!!" He throws his head in his neck and starts to laugh out loud. The person behind him pushes the knife in his side now. A soft voice starts to whisper with an angry tone. " Listen you big ox, i will let you bleed to death if you don’t give me the money." Slowly the knife penetrates his side, just a little cut to warn him. Xanthos keeps on laughing as if he doesn’t feel the sharp knife. He sighs and stands still with a smile on his face. " A big ox eh? To judge someone you hardly know is not very polite milady. I am a kind and noble knight who makes a living in a honest way and i can strongly recommend you will do the same." Again he laughs.
The figure starts to laugh as well. The knife disappears from his side and Xanthos can relax. He turns around to the laughing voice and slowly a woman starts to appear. Xanthos smiles when he sees the soft face and the blond curls of a woman he already knows. She grins and gives him a hug. Her head rests against his big chest. " Hello Xanthos." Xanthos kisses the head of the little woman and laughs. " Hello my lady Calisto. Still on the wrong side of the path eh?" She laughs and looks up to the big knight. Her eyes twinkle and she sticks out her tongue. " You know me Xanthos….hehehehe…i enjoy this to much and it’s a easy way to make some money! So who cares." She lifts up her shoulders and shakes her head. She starts to walk to the big battlehorse. The stallion neighs when he recognizes her. Gently he pushes his nose against her small hand. She strokes his big head and smiles. " Hello petit. No silly, i don’t have an apple for you!" The big horse neighs again and shakes his manes.
The big man sighs. " His name isn’t Petit Calisto. Damn, you are not good for my glorious reputation. A noble knight like me, with a horse named Petit?" Xanthos laughs again.
Calisto smiles and then looks at him. " So my overgrown friend, what brings you here? You are a little bit out of your territory." She laughs and sits down on the soft dark ground. He sniffs and looks offended. " Territory eh? Since when have i become a man with a territory? Really Calisto come on. We knights only hang around eachother if it’s really important and since this world is no longer ours, well…. what’s a knight to do?" He laughs and continues " And you my sweet dearest are not exactly home as well. What brings you to this beautiful country side?" Sarcastically he spreads his arms and points to the grey land they are in. Once the Midlands were green and had lots of wildlife. Xanthos sighs and sits down next to the woman. " What is going on Calisto? Why would the queen of thieves travel to the Midlands alone and why would one of the last remaining knights risk getting killed to come down here?" He looks sad and plays with a branch.
Calisto looks up to the knight. " To be honest my friend, i have no idea. So much has happened and there are no humans left in the cities. And now…." She sighs and looks at him with tears in her eyes. " Did you know they killed Marag?" Xanthos looks back shocked and pulls her to his chest. " I am so sorry Calisto. God, what the hell is going on? How could they have captured Marag? Oh no, what happened Cally?" He caresses her hair as he calls her by her pet name. She starts to speak with a trembling voice. " I really don’t know what happened. We all tried so hard to protect him and eachother but it was no use they were with to many and we just couldn’t hold on. He sacrificed himself so we could escape. God Xanthos, he was like a father to me. He looked in my eyes when he saw i couldn’t get through to him and he just smiled and waved. I was invisible and he still knew how to see me. And then they killed Mary. They just cut open her throat and pushed her to him. And then he said goodbye to me and ordered the Clan to retreat and we never saw him again until we found his head on a spear and the entrance of the city." Calisto starts to cry and Xanthos just holds her. " I tried to defend him. My arrows killed the ones next to his daughter Mary, but he was in trouble too. He was too old for this to happen and he just lost it when Mary was murdered. I couldn’t save them both so i hesitated and now they are both dead and that’s my fault." Xanthos holds her tightly and cradles her.
