Fushigi Yugi translates to the Mysterious or Wonderous Play, and it's a manga and an anime that revolves mostly around a young schoolgirl named Miaka and her best friend Yui. While in the library one day, Miaka stumbles across (or rather, is lead to) a room full of old books. She sees of vision of a sparkling red bird, and finds an ancient Chinese book called The Universe of the Four Gods.
Yui finds her friend soon afterward, and they stop to read the book - but, upon turning the first page, a brilliant red light engulfs to two young women, and they vanish from the room. Miaka and Yui wake up to find themselves in an unfamiliar world, and are soon attacked by bandits looking for money. A young blue haired man (whom both the girls immediately take a shine to) saves them, but quickly ditches them when he realizes they can't pay him for his good deed.
It is not long afterward when Yui and Miaka become separated; Yui is somehow thrown back into the library, and takes to reading the book, which she discovers is now being written by Miaka and her adventures!
I COULD go into their (yes, their...Yui ends up in the book again, as well) adventures there, but basically all you need to know is that the four lands in the book are at war with one another, and there is a legend that says that a girl from another world must come, gather the seven star warriors (or seishi) of her land, and summon the powers to defeat the others. The girl of legend then receives three wishes...
Miaka becomes the Suzaku no Miko, of the land of Konan, in order to wish herself back home.
But then, she never realized she might fall in love, or have to win her best friend over from the enemy's side...
