Magic Knight Rayearth is a manga (and later an anime) about three 8th grade girls named Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu. Fate sees the three of them to Tokyo Tower during a school field trip, and after the trio each takes notice of one another, they are suddenly sucked right through the floor and find themselves falling helplessly through the sky.
As Umi and Fuu topple toward the ground, Hikaru manages to glance at their surroundings, find mountains, oceans, forests, and other bits of land that would be out of place in the middle of Tokyo.
The three girls soon discover that they have been sucked into another world, called Cephiro, and that the lands in which they are standing are crumbling. They are told they must become legendary magical knights, summon enchanted armor and weapons, and save Princess Emeraude from the evil Zagato.

Here are the three knights themselves; Hikaru, the perky red-head and the one to call on the power of Rayearth; Umi, the snippy blue haired prep-student to call on the power of Selece; and Fuu, the calm and wise controller of the power of Windam.
