Gorilla

by Dale Christopher

Genus species: Gorilla gorilla gorilla (hairy human)
Size: male to 5.5 ft., female to 4.5 ft. Mature females
are approximately half the weight of males. Infant gorillas weigh about 5 lb at birth.
Weight: males to 400 lb., females up to 1225 lb.

Description: largest of all primates; hair color from black to grayish
or reddish-brown that covers the body except on face, soles of hands and feet, and upper chest; adult males or silverbacks acquire a silver-gray color across the back and upper thighs at sexual maturity
Life span: 30 to 40 years in the wild; 40 to 50 years in captivity Habitat: tropical forests, swamp forests, clearings and forest edges
within the African countries of Cameroon, Peoples Republic of Congo,
Gabon, Central African Republic, and Equatorial Guinea. Gorillas are mainly ground-living, but where trees are strong enough and fruiting, whole groups can be seen up them, even the mature males. The height above the ground that animals build the nests in which they sleep at night is inversely proportional to their weight, with the silverbacks usually being on or close to the ground. Gorilla and chimpanzee nests look alike, but can usually be told apart because chimpanzees nest so much higher up trees than do gorillas.

Social Behavior: Groups contain 5-30 individuals with usually a single
silverback male who acts as the leader, one or two black-backed
sub-adult males, several adult females, and up to ten juveniles and
infants. Groups are very cohesive and generally peaceable. There is
little overt dominance among females, but access to the breeding females is the prerogative of the silverback male.

Diet: more than 200 types of plants: fruits, stems, flowers, shoots, bulbs, bark, leaves, pith, as well as invertebrates such as termites and ants.
