Zombies are a supernatural being created by reanimating a corpse by voodoo or some other means.   Zombies can not speak or perform any action by their own free will.  They are given simple instruction and mindlessly carry them out.  Although a zombie will attack in defense it can not make cognoscente decisions.  While they need not eat or sleep zombies have a limited life time as there bodies continue to decay.  Since after a time they become useless, the creator usually want the freshest corpse he can get.

Besides simply slaying a zombie a legend says that by hearing a living human call his name, or eating meat or salt.  The spirit will be released and the body will run wild like a rabid animal.

The zombie's life is a true hell on earth as the spirit is put back in the lifeless body under control of it's creator.  There are elaborate rites that can protect one from becoming a zombie at the time of his burial.
