Powers: Spencer is a genius when it comes to working with Robots and inventing...He has created a number of Spider-Slayers that were all major threats to Spider-Man.

Origin: Spencer was initially hired by J. Jonah Jameson, editor of the Daily Bugle known for labeling Spider-Man a public menace...He was hired to create a robot to stop Spider-Man and and failed...Each time...And each time, Smythe's obsession with Spider-Man grew with every Spider-Slayer that he created until his death.

Spider-Slayer I

Appeared:
Amazing Spider-Man #25 (June 1965)

Creator: Spencer Smythe

Powers: Sensors that could detect & track down any spider, slippery chemical coated body to deflect Spider-Man's webbing, arms & legs could extend & climb walls, Use of super strong coils to ensnare its victims...Has use of 2-way video system for J. Jonah Jameson to see & hear by use of remote control.

Results: Spider-Man eventually broke the control panel on this first Spider-Slayer to free himself and� left his costume behind to humiliate Jameson and Smythe.


Spider-Slayer II

Appeared:
Amazing Spider-Man #58 (March 1968)

Creator: Spencer Smythe

Powers: More of a humanoid form than the predecessor Slayer, this one is much stronger with more sensitive sensors...It also has the ability to discharge destructo-beam blasts.

Results: Spider-Man lured the Slayer to Spencer Smythe's lab that contained many tested spiders and eventually the Slayer's sensors overloaded and exploded.


Spider-Slayer III & IV (Mark III & IV)

Amazing Spider-Man #105-107 (February-April 1972)

Creator: Spencer Smythe

Powers: These Slayers were in the form of a giant spider that shot it's own artificial webbing and uses a blade to slice through Spidey's webbing...The fourth one was an even larger version of Mark III & was operated from within by Smythe himself...This Slayer also had use of Ethyl Chloride Spray to use on its victims.

Results: Spider-Man broke into the cockpit of the Slayer and rewired it's controls...Eventually Mark III blew up the next time Smythe activated it.


Spider-Slayer V

Appeared:
Amazing Spider-Man #150 (November 1975)

Creator: Spencer Smythe

Powers: This Slayer was actually preceded by three others in that Smythe used robots in the form of the Spider-Man villains Kingpin, Sandman, and the Vulture...After Spider-Man defeated these 3 robots, they exploded...Then the 5th true Spider-Slayer struck with its new webbing and steel tentacles.

Results: Spider-Man had a much easier time with this Spider-Slayer in that he simply freed himself of it's tentacles and punched out Spencer Smythe..


The Middle Period

Spider-Slayer VI

Appeared:
Amazing Spider-Man #167 (April 1977)

Creator: Marla Madison

Powers: The first Slayer not created by Spencer Smythe had a Psycho-Cybernetic helmet which J. Jonah Jameson commanded mentally...It also had Super Strength,� shot filament spray, and fired impulse beams.

Results: A statue of Prometheus fell onto the Slayer and crushed it while Fighting in Rockefeller Center..


Spider-Slayer VII

Appeared:
Amazing Spider-Man #191 & 192 (April & May 1979)

Creator: Spencer Smythe

Powers: Tabbing it the most indestructible Spider-Slayer of all time didn't matter much in the end for Spencer Smythe as this was his last Spider-Slayer he created before his death..

Results: This Slayer fell many stories to the street while fighting Spider-Man on a tall building...It was forever destroyed.


Spider-Slayer VIII

Appeared:
Amazing Spider-Man Annual #19 (1985)

Creator: Alistaire Smythe

Powers: In the form of a Flying Saucer, this Spider-Slayer had the ability to fly of course...It included several weapons including Laser Guns, Extendable Claws, and Metallic Whips..

Results: Spider-Man lured this Slayer to fly into power lines and it short circuited the systems onboard.

Spider-Slayer IX

Appeared:
Amazing Spider-Man #291 & 292 (Aug & Sept 1987)

Creator: Alistaire Smythe

Powers: The first true Slayer that Alistaire created was a gigantic robot that was operated within by Smythe...It had enormous limbs that could extend many stories as well as "loaded" fingers that could shoot coils or ethyl chloride.

Results: Spider-Man smashed the gigantic robot open after the Slayer attacked Mary Jane Watson.

Powers: Alistaire is also a� technological genius, maybe even more so than his Father...He has created a more Spider-Slayers than his Father...As the "Ultimate" Spider-Slayer, Smythe uses his technological hardened body as a weapon with its Biorganic Carapace which boosts his strength and protects him from harm while using razor-sharp spikes from his arms & shoulders on the offense...It also enables him to walk once again.

Origin: After being crippled from crashing his 1st Spider-Slayer, Smythe became wheelchair ridden and became transformed slowly into the "Ultimate" Spider-Slayer.

Alistaire was initially a disturbed loner who was obsessed with avenging his father's death...His first Spider-Slayer was actually a Flying Saucer equipped with various weaponry...Somehow he was convinced that Mary Jane Watson was Spider-Man and caught her...This brought his first downfall as the real Spider-Man saved her and Smythe flew his Slayer into power lines and was left crippled until...

...Alistaire slowly evolved into something� much different...After another defeat at the hands of Spider-Man while inside a Giant Spider-Slayer, Alistaire encased himself in a Biorganic Carapace during the classic "Invasion of the Spider-Slayers" storyline and became the "Ultimate" Spider-Slayer, but again, was defeated at the hands of Spider-Man...I guess it runs in the family!

Invasion Spider-Slayer I (Alien)

Powers: The first Spider-Slayer that Spider-Man encountered during the Invasion of the Spider-Slayers storyline was an alien like robot with razor sharp talons and tail...It also had an extendable razor inside its body it used to cut through Spidey's webbing.

Results: A street worked used a jackhammer on its head and shorted this Slayer out...Spider-Man then tore it's head off.


Invasion Spider-Slayer II (Birdy)

Amazing Spider-Man #368 (November 1992)

Creator: Alistaire Smythe

Powers: This Slayer had the ability of flight as well as using its sharp talons and extendable tail spikes as weapons...It had a slippery surface to deflect Spidey's webbing and emitted metallic bolts from its "beak".

Results: Spider-Man simply smashed it's head in and shorted it out...Not exactly one of the more powerful Slayers!


Invasion Spider-Slayer III (Dark Ironman)

Powers: "Dark Ironman" had the power of flight from use of it's boot rockets...It was also very agile & powerful...It emitted head-blasts and had a firearm in place of a right hand/ limb.

Results: Spider-Man unloaded 2 full web cartridges on this Slayer holding it firm until the building they were fighting in collapsed on top of him after blowing up..


Invasion Spider-Slayer IV (Amoeboid)

Amazing Spider-Man #370 (December 1992)

Creator: Alistaire Smythe

Powers: First thought to be a non-robot, this Slayer was Super Strong with Shape Shifting abilities.

Results: Spider-Man's arch nemesis, The Scorpion used it's tail and channeled electricity into the robot thereby destroying it...The Scorpion got a "charge" out of it as well!

Invasion Spider-Slayer V (Tri-Head)

Amazing Spider-Man #371 (December 1992)

Creator: Alistaire Smythe

Powers: This Slayer had 3 personalities courtesy of a captive of Smythe's named Max Young, another robotic field genius...The Slayer itself had Jet pack which enabled flight and was Super Strong...Weapons used were Blasts that it emitted from it's fingertips and hooks that sprang from its hands.

Results: Spider-Man's talked this Slayers 3 personalities to quarrel with themselves...It eventually blasted it's own head off.


Invasion Spider-Slayer VI (Black Widow)

Amazing Spider-Man #372 (January 1993)

Creator: Alistaire Smythe

Powers: This Slayer was pretty simple in that it had Razor like retractable arms...It eventually formed a larger & stronger Slayer with Invasion Slayers VII & VIII.

Results: Spider-Man and the Black Cat used electricity to short out the combined efforts of Spider-Slayers VI, VII, & VIII...Its insides went on fire as a result.

(Tarantula & Scorpion)

Amazing Spider-Man #372 (January 1993)

Creator: Alistaire Smythe

Powers: Both of these "brothers" had Pinchers and sharp legs as well as being Super Strong...Tarantula had great jumping abilities and the Scorpion had a Tail Spike.

Results: Spider-Man and the Black Cat used electricity to short out the combined efforts of Spider-Slayers VI, VII, & VIII...Its insides went on fire as a result.


Appeared: Web Of Scarlet Spider #2 (December 1995)

Creator: Alistair Smythe

Powers: These Slayers were actually Cybernetic Cyber-Slayers controlled with a visor during the "Cyberwar" 4 part storyline running in the Scarlet Spider issue #2's...They were basically just brute forces with razor sharp edges on their body with super strength.

Results: Alistair Smythe was defeated by Doctor Octopus II over control of the visor that cybernetically controls the Cyber Slayers...The visor was subsequently destroyed in a fight with the Scarlet Spider.

Spider-Slayer - Alternate Reality

Powers: This Slayer was from an alternate reality in the pages of Spider-Girl...It was very similar to the first Spider-Slayer and had use of coils and sensors.

Results: Similar to the results of Amazing Spider-Man #25, this world's Spider-Man also left his costume behind to taunt Jameson and Smythe after defeating the Slayer.




Spider-Slayers Revenge

Powers: This Slayer is a minature killing machine that is mentally controled by Alister. Able to paralyze and mind wipe its victumes

Results: Despite the power and numbers of the mini slayers, Spider-man was able defeat the slayers through several means from crushing them to short circuit them. He finally took them all out when he destoryed the Emotion Slayer. Which was powering all of them.




Spider-Slayers Revenge (Emotion Slayer)

Amazing Spider-man vol. 2 #20 & 21 (June & July 2000)



Creator: Alister Smythe

Powers: This Slayer was able to mentally link with Spider-man's emotions. In order to learn of those he cared for and loved. That way the slayer and its army of Mini-slayers would be able to lock on them and kill them.

Results: Spider-man used the slayer's powers to his advantagle. He was able to shatter the slayer with his fists and its own lazer blasts. In doing so the other Mini-slayers were destroyed.
