Mors, or Thanatos, the Roman god of death is depicted as having wings.


Nike

Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, can run and fly at great speed. She is often pictured with Athena. Not only did she have wings, she had a long robe and often a staff. This particular statue is taken from Samothrace. It was sculpted in about 190 BC. and is around eight feet high. The sculpture depicts Nike as she is landing on a war ship to celebrate the victory of the heroes.


Thriae were three holy Greek virgins. They lived at Mt. Parnassus, where they tossed pebbles to tell the future or see into the unknown. Hermes, the messenger god, taught them the art. Ocassionaly, they are thought to be old women, others they appear to be bees covered in pollen, each depiction having wings.


Van

In Tenkuu no Escaflowne, Van and his brother Folken are depicted as having wings. Their wings come from their mother who was a member of the cursed dragon clan. The wings brought many problems for not only his mother, but Van himself. People that knew the truth were afraid of him because of the bad stories surrounding the clan. His true power came from fighting the truth about his past and his knowledge. Eventually, people started to accept that he was of the cursed clan and let him become their ruler. Folken, however, showed his true power, which eventually led to his downfall.


Cupid

Cupid, or Eros in Greek, was the son of Venus. He carried arrows on his back that would make someone fall in love if they were hit in the heart by that arrow. This painting, named Cupid a Captive was done by Francois Boucher in 1754. The painting depicts Cupid and other little children with wings.


Hermes

In Greek mythology, Hermes was the messenger god, as well as the god of good fortune, trade and riches. He wore winged shoes to deliver letters to people. His parents were Zeus and Maia, and he was often the deity of tricksters.
