Last Dance She Said

"Around the corner is this place," she said.
Scampering off I followed as you led.

We walked through light filtered by the leaves.
You jumped into a stream that made my toes freeze.

You giggled when I gave you flowers.
Laughing, you ran from the May showers.

I gave you a ring made of grass.
We lay there watching the day pass.

"Today let's go over there," you said.
I smiled and nodded my head.

And when I asked how long, you said just another mile.
Looking back over you shoulder you gave me that smile.

You laughed as I compared you to a rose.
I tickled your feet, you wiggled your toes.

We lay out all night watching the sky fall.
You held my hand, not scared at all.

"Let's go to the May Dance," you said.
I couldn't answer so I kissed you instead.

At the door you gave me that smile only meant for me.
I didn't know it was one of the last I'd see.

I gave you a boquet and a silver ring.
You said, "I'll never take it off again."

I waled you home that night.
You invited me in, I stayed till first light.

"I must go away," you said.
"I don't understand," I said.

You went off to find your life.
I thought you would be here through joy and strife.

We found many places over the years.
I made you smile and you helped me conquer my fears.

The lights are dim now.
It's a long walk home now.
My heart is cold now.
Nowhere to go now.
