The Phone Call
***Ayende Jen***
Lia an Cuebiyar
Jen didn't know why they had taken her or why they were holding her here,
in this Light-forsaken cell in the police station. She was sick of hearing self-
righteous Reds spouting nonsense about how they were doing this for the good
of Tar Valon and ultimately the world. She hadn't done anything wrong!
The policewoman who had brought her toast last night came back into the
small room where Jen was being held, the light of dawn spilling in behind her.
They didn't bother with bars here, no; because Jen could channel. And they'd
sheilded her besides! Apparently they couldn't be too careful with a hardened
criminal such as herself. "Good morning," the Red said cheerfully. What an
oxymoron--a cheerful Red.
Jen looked the other way, not saying a word.
"I brought you some breakfast," she said.
Jen wanted to spit on the toast the woman carried on a red plastic tray.
And on the woman herself. She refrained.
"Something wrong? I may not be a Grey, but they say I always had it in
me. Once when I was Accepted, I--"
"What the Hell do you want from me?" Jen exclaimed, the words bursting
from her lips in frustrated anger.
"Want?" the Red echoed innocently. "We just want you to confess, that's
all."
Jen stared the woman in the eye defiantly for a long time, and then
responded, "I get one phone call."
"Pardon?"
"One phone call," Jen repeated. "I'm allowed one phone call, aren't I?
Or has that aspect of justice gone down the tubes as well? Light! I don't even
know what I'm being bloody arrested for!"
"They didn't read you your charges?"
"Light, no!"
"Breaking and entering, grand theft, assault and battery ..." the Red
sister's voice trailed off.
"What the ...? Bloody!" Jen started muttering to herself, then stared at
the Aes Sedai again. "I want my phone call," she demanded.
"I'll see what I can do about that. Um ... you wait here; I'll be right
back."
Jen waited. And waited. Chained as she was, she couldn't reach the
bloody toast she didn't even want to eat, much less pace the room as she did
when she got nervous. She couldn't even channel her way out. She couldn't
really do much of anything besides think and mutter to herself, and the latter
would eventually drive her to insanity.
I'm coming
What the ... ? Confused at first, Jen cocked her head to listen for any
sound that may come. The only sound she heard was the slight whirring of the
ventilation system ... but yes, she could feel him coming closer. Davidson was
coming to rescue her. She laughed in spite of herself. So I have a knight in
shining armor coming to rescue me, have I? she thought. Well, she answered
herself, that's what Warders are for, isn't it?
She kicked arbitrary thoughts around in her mind, some sort of saucy and
others frustrated. Breaking and entering. Grand theft. Assault and battery.
She had done no such things, much as she'd love to knock an Aes Sedai or two
out. Preferably these flaming Reds.
The sister who'd come by earlier--probably just Raised, from the way
she'd acted--stuck her head in the door. "You can make that phone call now,"
she informed her.
Jen nodded; she'd heard and understood. She began to rise but was
stopped.
"I'll bring the phone in." A few moments later she came back, cordless
phone in hand. "Dial 9 first," she instructed. Jen smiled sarcastically and
took the handset from her, glaring icily in hopes she'd leave. She did.
Expertly Jen dialed the number of the Purple Tower--one of the general
phones rather than a private line; this way anyone could answer the phone
instead of specifically Patty or Kaitlyn. It rang.
And rang.
And continued to ring.
"Somebody pick up!" Jen muttered under her breath. "Pick up!"
***Ayende Patty***
Anima de Turrae
Patty watched fascintaed as Srendy *inserted* himself into the
computer. She was so caught up she didn't notice the phone ringing.
:::A call, Sister.::: Patty snapped out of it and heard the ringing.
"Hello?" she answered. "Patty! Thank the light!"
"Jen! Mom! Are you okay??!"
***Eddie Gaidin***
Eddie and Dav went through the woods along the road so as not to draw
attention to themselves. Having thrown on their fancloth cloaks, they were
indistinguishable from the other shadows of the night. Eddie could faintly
hear Dav gliding through the woods, but he couldn't see him. Holding his
katana low and poised, Eddie made sure his daggers were secured on him, and
his ring was in place.
They exited the woods and found themselves in a clearing. In the middle
of it, surrounded by a fence, was the Tar Valon police station. "Great," Eddie
heard Dav mutter from about three feet away from him.
"No worries, Dav. We can take this place."
"I can feel Jen. She's over there," and he pointed to the northeast corner
of the building.
"Okay. That's where they would expect us to come in. I think you should
stop channeling, too. I'm sure they have males in there who can channel. Here's
my extra sword."
Together, in perfect step, Eddie and Dav approached the fence of the police
station.
***Ayende Jen***
Lia an Cuebiyar
Ring. Ring ... Patty answered the phone.
"Patty, it's you! Thank the Light!" Jen responded.
"Jen, where are you? Lia said she saw you forced into a police car. Is
everything okay?"
"Considering I'm in a cell somewhere in this bloody police station for
something I didn't even do ... they're charging me with breaking and entering,
theft, and assault and battery! Light!" Jen composed herself before she went
on. "I know Davidson is coming after me, and I'm sure ... well, is everything
alright over there? Nevermind that," she answered herself, "I'm sure you're
fine. You're capable. More than capable. But--oh, blood and ashes! There's
something I have to say but can't remember. Oh well. Listen--I don't have much
longer; they're timing me. But I need you to do me a favor."
"What?"
"They're going to put me on trial soon. I think. They'd better. Anyhow,
you know how those are run, with all the Blues fighting with Reds and well,
you know. The point is, I need you to find me a lawyer. Someone who knows what
they're doing. Do we have any former Blues? A court-appointed Blue Sister
would just ... well, call me paranoid, but they're all after me. They all want
to see the Purple in ruins, if that's discernable. Um, Patty, I know this sounds
... harsh ... but I've got to go now or they'll cut off my conn--"
BEEP.
"Bloody!" They'd disconnected the line; her time limit had run out. At
least she'd said all she needed to say.
Trying not to throw the phone across the room, Jen fumed silently to
herself. It was cold in the small room. She hoped she wasn't coming down with
something.
The young Aes Sedai--whose name Jen learned was Sura, came back into the
room, the light dim behind her.
Dusk? Jen thought. There's no way a whole day could have passed
already. But it had to be. Light from windows doesn't lie.
"I need the phone back," Sura said--still so cheerful. She really
shouldn't have been Red.
Jen glared. She wasn't going to give her the handset.
"Please?" Sura asked.
She pretended she didn't hear.
The Red sister left.
Jen waited.
***Ayende Lia***
Plum SianSepta
The Tower was in Chaos.... Hap hadn't been in his hole, but Lia found
him later when she reported to the Studio... So now, here she sat, in her
windowseat, chainsmoking, which even for her was a bad thing, and thinking...
The Gholom was Hacking away into the Files of the Police station, Eddie
and Davidson were hightailing it into another Disaster, and the scariest part
of the whole thing was... Lia wasn't involved... She thought and she thought
and she thought.. Wanted a safe way to find out exactly what the HELL was
going on here.... Then something caught her eye out the window, and the
image jogged a strand in her brain long since forgotten... Standing Quietly,
She Stepped to the doorway of the room, fixing her jacket, and making sure she
had her bike-keys.
In her focused state, the room seemed unreal, and someone spoke, "Lia,
Where are you going.?" Not knowing who spoke, or really caring, Lia answered,
Her accent thick with both anger and worry, " I'm going to get some answers.I'm
going to the White Tower...." and The next sound heard was a roar of a Silver
and Black Ninja tearing towards the center of town....
***Nila Liagala***
When Patty sent all the Nila and Studé back to their rooms, a look of
utter shock crossed Liagala's face. Mom gets abducted, the whole PT is a mess,
and they expected her to go to sleep? Yeah, right. She dejectedly walked
toward the Nila wing with the rest, then quickly crept back to the Auditorium
to see what was up. She arrived just in time to see the gholam... enter the
computer? Okay... absorbed in watching the flashing screen, she almost missed
Patty's announcement that Mom needed a Lawyer, and anyone with Blue training
would be useful. Pausing for a moment, she pondered how much trouble she'd
get in if she revealed herself. Oh, heck with it. I'm not going to sleep, I
might as well help. Waving her arms and yelling, she called that she would
volunteer to be Mom's Lawyer, if she were needed. Patty looked up in surprise
at the Nila, and said...
***Ayende Patty***
Anime de Turrae
"Aren't you supposed to be in bed?" She rubbed a weary hand across her
eyes. This was bad. This whole situation was bad. The were charging Jen with
breaking and entering. Patty got the feeling that the evidence that would
be used against her was the sliver of a purple ring that she'd discovered on that
trip to Tel'aran'rhiod that seemed so long ago. How they could prove
assault and battery, now that was another story.
The look on Liagala's face said she didn't know whether to be remorseful
for not following directions, or defiant for wanting to help. Patty waved her
into the room.
At that moment, Sredny oozed out of the computer. He stood up, glowed,
said "What a rush" and promptly passed out. Liagala moved forward to catch him,
but Patty stopped her before she could touch him. "That's probably a bad idea.
He warned me before he went in not to touch him when he...came out." Patty did
make sure to check that he was breathing before she turned her attention back
to Liagala.
"I don't really have time to be angry that you didn't go to bed. It's
just about morning now anyway." She heaved a heavy sigh. "Tell me what you
think you can do for Jen. Or, who do you trust enough to be part of her legal
defense?"
***Ayende Nyna***
Lilac SianSepta
Nyna clenched her teeth together in fury. Speak, dammit, at least say
something!!! The ride in the police car was, as expected, far from pleasant.
Still held tightly by Air, they hadn't even bothered to put handcuffs on her.
And this silent treatment. Whenever Nyna attempted to say anything, anything
at all, she was ignored as if not even there. Nyna thought she was going to
explode.
Arriving at the police station brought about some excitement. An angry
mob seemed to be camping out in front of the mail entrance with "Kill the
Purple Witches" signs. Nyna didn't know whether to laugh at this pathetic
sight or cry. Fools.. Light, they are such fools!!! Nyna watched with a
smirk on her face as the police channeled at the top of their abilities to
keep the mob away from Nyna, as she was led up the stairs.
Once inside, she was quickly forced into a narrow hallway, obviously
leading to the jail cells. Nyna was almost amused at the stupid grins of
everyone who she encountered on the way. Coming around a corner, Nyna thought
she saw Kelly, but when she tried to yell out her friend's name, the flows of
Air tightened around her mouth even more. Blood and bloody ashes!!!
A former Blue before joining the Purple Ajah, Nyna raised her eyebrows
in surprise when she was pushed into a cell without the usual taking of the
fingerprints, mug shots, info or anyting else of the sort. The door was locked
after Nyna, and everyone of her "escort" silently dissapeared.. everyone except
the woman, who seemed to be in charge. Feeling the weaves of Air loosen around
her a bit, Nyna spoke up.
"Do I get a phone call?" She looked at the woman hopefully.
Silence.
"Look, I know I am entitled to a phone call."
Silence.
"Listen, lady, I know my rights, I want my phone call!"
Silence.
"Stop ignoring me, dammit!!!" Nyna cursed out some more, but to no
evident success. Dammit, dammit, dammit... Nyna dropped on the floor and
hit it with her hand a few times in desperation. When she finally looked up,
the woman was already gone.
***Ayende Lia***
Plum SianSepta
)
Lia just plain Knew going to the tower was a bad idea.... so far, Jen had
been taken, for Assault and Battery, well, Light knew what the real reasons
Mom had been abducted were, and no one had heard from Kelly or Nyna since Patty
had been Stilled.
Lia manuvered her bike around some wreckage in the road, noticing a
familiar color scheme, she realized that looked an awful lot like Eddie's
Ninja, "Hmmm Odd... " Further down, she noticed the wreakage of
Davidson's car as well... "Fuck... This is Bad.. Very very Bad......"
She couldn't feel Saidin anywhere around the area, " Well.... I'll just have
to hope that they're alright... I'm sure the Warders can take care of
themselves... " She roared past the police station, pushing the speed limit,
but not breaking it... And ended her ride in the parking lot of the White
Tower.
Parking and removing her keys, she took a deep breath, never wanting to
be at this place again. She stepped up the stairs, and walked inside...
placing her hands out at her sides in a gesture of peace, she walked to the
desk where visitors were supposed to sign in.
The Novice that sat there seemed occupied with her paperwork, without
looking up she asked Lia to state her name, and reason for her visit. Lia
laughed, and placed her hands on her hips, recognizing the girl from right
before she had been expelled from the tower. "Ayende Vera Liandryn Sierra
Jadia Merit Blayde ~ Rose, of the Purple Tower, SianSepta of the Plum Septa,
Requesting immediate, and non terroristic audience with The Amrylin, and her
council."
The Novice looked up in shock, "You aren't supposed to.... Why did you
think.... And you of all of ...." The poor Girl Stammered...
Lia took up her full don't give me your bull shit, I'm your Superior,
Former Aes Sedai pose.. " Nil... I mean Novice, I gave a request to see the
Amrylin, requests of the common people to have audience with the Amrylin are
never denied, should mine be, the Tar Valon Sun will know about it upon my
departure. I am not here for frivolity nor personal reasons, I just want some
answers, and the look on your face betrays that you know why... I'd suggest
not trying any tricks with me, Novice, Because you obviously haven't learned
to maintain your emotions as of yet.. Now... I requested an audience with the
Amrylin ... Please see that my request is granted.
The Novice scurried off to the Keeper's Office, as if the Dark One himself
was on her heels...
Lia waited patiently for what felt like years, but was merely a few minutes.
The young Novice hurried back and led Lia rather reluctantly to the Amrylin's
Council Chamber. She gestured to a seat, and Lia sat, lit a cigarette and
waited for Mayadi to make her presance known.
An Accepted entered, "All presant rise to acknowlage The Amrylin Seat,
The Flame of Tar Valon." Lia didn't rise... Mayadi entered and sat at the
head of the Table, Lia smoked. Mayadi tried to keep her Aes Sedai Calm,
"Why did you request this, Daughter..?"
Lia snubbed her cigarette on the table, "Firstly, Mayadi, I'm not your
Daughter anymore. Secondly, you know why I'm here. I want to know whay Jen,
My Mother, the Cuebiyar and Heart of the Purple Tower was taken from our home
in the middle of the night, why the Red Ajah can't wait until a suitable hour
before stealing a person away, and Quite frankly, they never even showed a
warrant..."
Mayadi swallowed, still calm. " Lia, Jennaea was arrested for breaking
and entering, as well as assault and battery, we found her broken ring in the
Keeper's study a few weeks ago. The Novices and Accepted, posted to keep watch
were found severly broken, and beaten with the power, also burned.... Badly
burned with saidar. We know it was Jennaea's ring because it had the Bat on
the underside. I'm sorry Lia, but there is nothing you can do for her, and while
I appreciate your concern, and your coming here peacefully, now you have had
your audience, and I ask you to leave, before I find you with treason for
betraying the Tower."
Lia stood, "Mayadi, with all due respect, I cannot betray a Tower that
abandoned me, nor one that had me expelled for speaking my mind. Secondly,
while I will leave, I have the proof that you cannot keep Jen in prison for
long.... I know something you never bothered to find out..."
And with that, she stood, And rode back to the Purple Annex....
Stepping back into the Annex, she found Patty, and told her what she had
learned..
Patty gasped, " But Lia... Jen isn't strong enough in Fire to severely burn
anyone...."
Lia smiled, "I know.... And that is how we will save her.... Sredny..
if you could access the files again, and get Jen's records as a Novice, and
Accepted, could you please print out the files that show that Jen never passed
the Fire tests in the White Tower..... "
***Ayende Patty***
Anima de Turrae
Patty was talking with Liagala about Jen's defense when Lia returned
from the White Tower. Lia quickly told of her meeting with Mayadi. Patty's
mind was racing. When she was in Tel'aran'rhiod, there had been no indication
of a use of fire outside the Keeper's study. Wait, Fire?
Patty gasped, " But Lia... Jen isn't strong enough in Fire to severely
burn anyone...."
Lia smiled, "I know.... And that is how we will save her.... Sredny..
if you could access the files again, and get Jen's records as a Novice, and
Accepted, could you please print out the files that show that Jen never passed
the Fire tests in the White Tower....."
Patty shared a relieved smile with Lia. As Novices in the Tower with
Jen, she'd been the one with stregnth in Fire, not Jen. She grimaced inwardly;
not that anyone needed to worry about her having that kind of Power now. She
prayed that Jen's records hadn't been deleted or changed. At this point
anything was possible. They did have the files Haplo had retrieved from
the Tower back when this had started, but those files were about the White Tower
trying to influence the polulace against the Purple Tower, not about members of
the Purpler Tower.
Patty addressed the young man who was still lying on the floor.
"Srendy, why don't you use the computer in my office to look for Jen's files.
That way we can read the files you've already brought up here." Patty looked
at him quizically. "Or do you need more time to recover?"
"Liagala, why don't you start checking out the files Srendy already
brought up on this computer, and see if it has any useful information."
Liagala nodded and got down to work.
"I'm going down to the kitchen for some coffee. Lia, will you walk with
me?"
Lia and Patty started out toward the kitchen; Moonlight Dancing padding
silently between them. Lia knew Patty had something to say, so she kept quiet
giving Patty a chance to collect her thoughts.
Patty stopped walking, Lia waited. "Lia...I..." Patty looked up with
her heart in her eyes. "Thanks for going to talk to Mayadi. I don't
think...even knowing it wasn't her..." Patty fought to keep control, but still
get the words out. Moonlight Dancing leaned in against her legs.
Lia tried to stop her, wave her off. "Patty, you don't have to...I know..."
Patty caught Lia's hand and held it. "I do have to. I couldn't have
gone to see Mayadi without falling apart. Not yet. I just really appreciate
you going. You've been taking care of all of us, and I just wanted to let you
know that I know." Patty gave Lia's hand a squeeze. "Thanks."
***Studè Sredney***
The Gholem
Sredny groaned as he regained conciousness. A light aura still hung around
him. He looked up to find that he was being asked to do it again. "My, you all
don't ask much do you. First I need a non-breakable container of water."
One of the other Studès brought it, and he plunged his hand into it. The
light drained from him, into the water, then into the container. He noted it
was heartstone, it just stood there. When he was finished, he pulled his hand
out, gasped, and sunk down in the chair.
"Okay, give me a second and I'll go again. First what I brought back though,
our beloved leader has...
"Been arrested on charges of breaking and entering, assault and battery, and
high treason." Patty said.
"Well thats just wonderful. Shows what use I am. Fine, incidentally she's
also been charged with breaking the Three Oaths, which immeadiately qualifies
her for Darkfriend judgment. And your friends, Kelly and Nina are being held
as well, I was kind of in a hurry so I didn't get a chance to read for what.
And they're gathering dirt, false or true, on all of us as well. It's nothing
much at the moment, but give it a few months, even a week or two, and the rest
of us may be recieving Red visits in the middle of the night as well."
"To be expected. We need you to retrieve those other files though. Can you?"
The gholam sighed and layed back for a moment. What he really needed was about three
days of sleep. Still, what was life without a little adventure?
"Yeah, sure. There's a slight problem though. The WT network is not accessable
genrally. The only entrances are through thrice daily communicatios between each of
the Ajahs and the main network. The Red network is going to become heavily fortied
now, since I broke it but was seen, the Blue network is a work of art, it has been
broken precisely six times, two of which by me, and I'm the only repeat offender.
They sent me a mail the second time saying I was welcome to try again, they had a
few new surprises. The White network isn't. It exists after a fashion I suppose, but
to the best of my knowledge its a closed system, never goes up to the rest of the
world. The Yellow network isn't much better. This leaves Grey, Green, and Brown. The
Grey netwrok is second only to the Blue, however they have the best tracking system,
and they will know that I did it, from where, and just precisely what I got. The Green
Ajah is curiously like the Red at this point, after the Great Shadow Hack of '87, they
realized that the Dark is not technophobic, and began a quest to barricade and prepare.
Which now leaves the Brown. That is the single biggest mess I have ever seen. That is
a constantly changing maze, it's entirely possible even I might get lost, however its
the least chance of detection."
"All of this means what?" asked Patty.
"The choice is yours. White and Yellow are out. Green and Red are heavily
fortified. Blue and Grey will either kill me or track me home. It's entirely
possible I, or any information wanted, will be lost in the Brown."
"Wonderful. Anything else?"
"Yes. The back files are kept in the banks of the Mistress of Novices.
There are a lot of switchbacks and disconnects. At any rate what it all comes
down too is that this is going to take a long, long time. We're looking at fifteen
hours minimum. Oh yes, and if I get caught, I'm Shadowspawn, guilty by defualt,
all those around me by association, and balefire will be used to wipe my taint
from the pattern as far back as possible."
Patty sighed, and thought. Finally she decided. "We still have a few friends
in the Green. I can tell you a few things that will make the trip easiar."
The gholam nodded and began listening. He also grabbed some food. And began
to eat. And eat. Electrocuting oneself took a lot out of you. When all was
finished he sighed, and began to head over to the computer. He began to do the
preliminaries, seeing how far he could go with just them. "We've got two hours
til the next scheduled access. I can make an independent access with your
friends clearance, however, it will be forwarded immeadiately to whoevers
heading up the Green Ajah, as well as probably the Blue and the Amyrilan."
"Hmm. Just wait, we can afford a little patience. But why would the Blue get
it?"
"As I said a work of art. The Blues seek current information, and the best
way to do that is take everyone elses info. So they screen and take what they want
during the major access times. It's how I got in once, attached myself to an
urgent file which was sucked down the Blue network."
"Wonderfull. Good luck to you gholam." She smiled then left.
Sredny stretched, and leaned back. He waited the two hours preparing a few
things, a couple little programs to make life easiar should something go
wrong. Finally the time came. "Join the Tower. Master the arts. Become adored
by thousands." He snorted, the jabbed his hand into the socket, head tilted
back in a slient scream. Finally he pulled it out, and dived into the computer,
and he was off.
