City-state of Aeyn
Although Aeyn lacks the history of it's northeastern
neighbor Moonshadow, it has had the richest history of all the nations
in so little time. Although it has changed since the days when it was known
as Aeynton and the goal of the project was the opening of a portal to a
realm that promised the Moonsea peace for all time. Today Aeyn is a large
and bustling city, full of people from all the vast reaches of the Moonsea,
the lands beyond the deserts to the south, the barbarians of the east,
and the people from the curious Seven Seas to the north. Before the breaking
of the Civilized Alliance and the rise of the Daclinian Dynasty of Baklava.
Now that the nations have split, the peace between Moonshadow and the lands
controlled by Aeyn are all that holds the fragile peace in the realms together.

Politics of the city
-
Who Rules:
The Council of Lords -- an organization composed
of upstanding civic figures.
-
Who Really Rules:
The Free Traders of Aeyn, along with the outlying
nobility, the heads of most of the other guilds in the city.

Economy
-
Population:
Aeyn's extremelly mild climate has made it a
haven for creatures the world over. It lies in the center of most trade
routes, and foreign ships prefer to stop in its ports because those of
Volyn are far to costly. As such, the city has a steady population of about
400,000 bodies. This rises to nearly 500,000 during the High Summer season.
During the coldest parts of the winter, which are actually rather mild,
the population almost never drops below 250,000.
-
Major Products:
The economy of Aeyn functions on one thing and
one thing only: trade. The farmers to the south bring their produce to
the city for sale, while more exotic goods are almost always available
to those with money, power, or both. Aeyn is one of the few places outside
Moonshadow proper that houses many elves, and their goods are available
to those with the right connections. In addition, the most exotic goods
arrive from the Continent, coming via Baklava; from the barbarous lands
to the east, and from the Lapis Isles, located on the top half of the world.

"Granny" Sarry -- This portly woman, whom everyone
calls just "Granny," runs a shop that opens onto the large bustling Market
Square of Aeyn, back from the sea where the land begins to slope upwards
to the hills. She is constantly found sitting in a mahogany rocking-chair
under the tarp outside the shop building amidst her wares. She wears a
smile and easily makes conversation with anyone who enters her shop. She
keeps sweets in her pockets which she bestows on any child that happens
to find his or her way into "Granny's Finest Wares." She deals in general
items, a sort of mideval hardware store. She is especially fond of Free
Plains barbarian boys; rumours claim either she hails from the Free Plains
or that she once loved one of the barbarians. This jovial woman enjoys
the very especial status of being one of the senior members of the Free
Traders Guild of Aeyn--one of the most important and influential guilds
in the city. In addition to this high honor, Granny also has the more dubious
distinction of being the Master Thief of Aeyn's Thieves Guild. Few, if
any, suspect this jolly old woman with her conservatively curled hair and
her sweets for children of any larceny greater than driving a hard bargain.
She has worked tirelessly to keep her identity secret all the while ambitiously
creating a powerful force in the city. Because of her position within the
Free Traders, those merchants loyal to the guild tend to suffer from less
trouble while those who dare to trade freelance find it difficult to stay
in business due to her terroristic tactics. She has constructed a labyrintine
lair beneath the streets that houses all the guild facilities, her personal
quarters, those of the captains of the guild, and an infamous anonymous
fencing ground where master thieves may meet fences who can pass their
catches with minimal risk. She pays token respect to Hislorken, but is
not by any means fanatically loyal. She has placed a shrine to the dark
god in her lair and is well connected (both figuratively and to the various
tunnels and sewers) to the church heirarchy and the illicit thieving school
within the Great University. Travellers are advised to avoid trespassing
in the thieves' guild's tunnels. Few have travelled them, mapped them,
or spoken of them. After all, dead men tell no tales.

Melodie's Way: This is the main thoroughfare through
town. Although the boulevard technically stretches from Southgate to the
doors of Castle Aeyn, it is split into two distinct parts. The first half,
running from Southgate to the University, is a center of trade with carts
and merchants to be found showing their wares on both sides of the street.
From the university north to the city's namesake, the street takes on a
much more eloquent appearance. The locations of the embassies of the others
nations to Aeyn are located there, as well the houses and villas of the
most prominent of the noble families. This upper half of the boulevard
is the site of many celebrations and soirees during the season from the
vernal equinox until Yule. During the warmer weather, musicians and other
entertainers will gather on the green in the center of the street and try
to earn their keep for the high clientele driving by or just strolling
through this park like area of the city. In honor of the bardic goddess,
every bard graduating from the University receives a stone of continual
light, which is enchanted to create light only after the sun has set. Each
new bard hurls the stone at any building, tree, or other permanent solid
object and the stone transfers its light to that object. As such, Melodie's
Way is always lit in decent light, which allows for twenty-four hour commerce
on the boulevard.
