TRUTH
UNTIL PARADOX (various
Authors, from White Wolf)
THE SINGER
(Calvin Miller)
THE BEGINNING
PLACE (Ursula
K. LeGuin)
THE TIME
QUARTET (Madeleine
L'Engle)
TRIO
FOR LUTE (R.A.
Mac Avoy)
Three books: Damiano, Damiano's
Lute, and Raphael.
A young Italian Witch wanders the land with a talking dog-familiar and
an angel who teaches him how to play the lute. Definitely more than
hedge-magic. An amazing and powerful trilogy.
TEA WITH
THE BLACK DRAGON (R.A.
MacAvoy)
The implacable hero, Mayland Long, seems to be a perfect Akashic Mage;
he believes himself to be a black dragon, and don't most "Scales of the
Dragon" Akashics have dragon-Avatars? The story of a strange and powerful
man (dragon) who finds himself embroiled in the mysterious disappearance
of Martha's daughter. Whose daughter? Martha MacNamara, the most Zen senior-citizen
I've ever seen. Story continued in the second book,
Twisting the Rope.
THE EARTHSEA
TRILOGY (Ursula
K. LeGuin)
Actually a quartet now, with Tehanu
added to Wizard of Earthsea,
Tombs of Atuan,
and The Farthest Shore.
Ancient, primal magicks in an archipelago called Earthsea, where dragons
the size of cities lurk on distant isles, and where Hermetic-like Mages
have an island called Roke all to themselves. Young Duny is taken from
the farming town of his birth by Ogion the Wise, who gives him a Truename
and teaches him the art that will set him on a world-wise search for knowledge,
and chasing his shadow.
ARS MAGICA (Judith Tarr)
THE
LEGENDS OF SAINT CAMBER OF CULDI (Katherine
Kurtz)
Three Books: Camber of Culdi, Saint
Camber, and Camber
the Heretic. Earliest int he chronology
of the series; the tale of a monastic member of the magical bloodline known
as the Deryni, set in a mythical world with strong parallels to Wales in
the Dark Ages. The pious and wise Camber copes with changes in the
Kingdom of Gwynedd, and being named a Saint.
THE CHRONICLES
OF THE DERYNI (Katherine
Kurtz)
Three Books: Deryni Rising, Deryni
Checkmate, High Deryni. A
skip ahead in time, the young prince Kelson, son of the beloved King Brion,
is prepared to take the throne, both as a noble...and secretly, with the
help of the feared and hated Duke Morgan, as one of the sorcerous Deryni.
An intrigue-filled tale of soldiers, sorcerors, withc-hunts, and would-be
Kings.
THE HISTORIES
OF KING KELSON (Katherine Kurtz)
Three Books: Bishop's Heir, King's
Justice, and
The Quest for Saint Camber. Kelson
has been King of Gwynedd for some time now, and troubles on the border
call his armies to attention.
THE HOUND
AND THE FALCON (Judith
Tarr)
Three Books: The Isle of Glass, The
Golden Horn, and
The Hounds of God. The tale of
a charismatic medieval priest who is a changeling, an exile from Faerie.
His travels span much of Europe, and in his search for identity and understanding,
he meets with Kings and Popes.
THE ADEPT
TRILOGY (Katherine
Kurtz and Deborah Turner Harris)
Five Books: The Adept, The Lodge
of the Lynx, The Treasure of the Templars, Dagger Magic,
and Death of an Adept.
A modern-day saga of a dashing magus in Scotland, leader of a mystical
Lodge sworn to protect Scotland from the evils of prideful magi and uncontrolled
forces. Action-packed and well-written, with tie-ins to Lammas
Night, Kurtz' excellent book about Nazi
occultism in World War II.
SHADOWLANDS
(Peter Straub)
The tale of a boy named Tom on the verge of puberty, Awakening, and apprenticeship
to a Master Magus of The Order. Straub presents an incredibly gothic
bent to some old fairy tales (which are pretty gruesome to begin with anyway),
and a new meaning to the phrase "rite of passage." One of the best
depictions of the use of magick I've seen in fiction.
