This file describes all branches and special levels in the Dungeons of Doom, 
except those levels of the Quest (which are given in the "quests.txt" file.)
It is divided in several parts, sorted by branch. Per branch, the various
special levels are described in the order in which they are usually
encoutered.

The Dungeons of Doom (D) are 25 to 30 levels deep. There are several special
levels in this main dungeon. Their location is indicated in the following
table.

Also in this table, you'll see where to find the so called branches, leading
away from the Dungeons of Doom. These branches may have branches or special
levels themselves, which are named when the branch in question is described
later on. In this document, branches are double underlined while levels are
single underlined.                       =================

                                 The Oracle
                                ~~~~~~~~~~~~
Do you want a hint...? Well, pay up! The larger room depicted has a door at
both the right and left side, and is centered on the screen. There are five
ordinary rooms on both sides, which contain the up and down staircases. The
little room in the centre has a gap at one of its sides. This is where the
Oracle lives. Seven random monsters are created, as well as 3 random traps
and 6 random objects.

                                 The Bigroom
                                ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This level is just as the name implies: nothing more than one BIG lit room,
containing 28 monsters, 6 traps, and 15 items. Get those wands before some
monster lays its hands on them! The stairs are placed randomly.

                              Medusa's Isle
                             ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You always get one of these two versions of Medusa's Isle. Be careful not to
join the fate of the statues you find here... On the both versions, randomly
generated monsters are ;'s, S's and g's. There is a 50% chance that one of 
the many statues dotted around the level has a shield of reflection.

Seven statues and 8 random objects are scattered around. There are 5 random
traps. There are at least 12 other monsters next to the ones shown,
including 2 S's on the squeaky boards shown.

There are 6 random objects, and a wand hidden under the boulder on the right
middle island. There is a magic trap and 4 random ones. The "'"'s at the
right are statues, but the four on top are also stone golems! The two below
have cobra's hidden beneath. There are 13 other randomly scattered monsters,
most islands should have at least one.

                                 The Castle
                                ~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are several ways to enter the stronghold: opening the drawbridge
(marked "#" below) - for example, with a wand of opening, a knock spell, or
by playing the appropriate tune -, or entering via the back entry (this
supposes posession of a ring of levitation, boots of water walking, etc.).
If you don't play the right tune, you get indications like in MasterMind.
There are no stairs down, but you can always use one of the trapdoors. Left
and right of the castle is a small maze.

To motivate you to clear out the castle, there are 4 storerooms (armour,
weapons, food and gems, randomly chosen which room contains what) and a
wand of wishing in one of the 4 towers. Randomly generated monsters include
liches, nagas, elementals, giants, mummies, ogres, rust monsters, trolls,
xorns, and zombies. Their initial placement in the throne room is random.
One of the places markes "/" below has a wand of wishing safely on it.

                              The Gnomish Mines
                             ===================

The Gnomish Mines are just as the name implies: large caves filled with
gnomes and some dwarves, some of the latter still busy mining. Objects to be
found are 3 random stones, one random tool, and 3 other objects per level.
There are six traps per level. Monsters found are 7 gnomes, a gnome lord, 2
dwarves, 2 random gnomes, and one other random humanoid, and other random
monsters can be generated as normal, and lots of gold and gems buried in the
walls (of which some gems may be real, and others worthless glass.) The Town
is found on one of levels 3-5, the Bottom Level on level 8-10 of the Mines.

                               The Mines' Town
                              ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Also known as the Shopping Mall, the Gnomish Mines' Town is a level which 
contains mainly a lot of buildings. The larger room depicted has a door or
gap at both the right and left side, and is centered on the screen. There
can be various shops: a tool shop, a food shop and a general store (90% 
chance of each) and a lighting shop which should contain at least 7 candles (always). Also, there is always a temple with a randomly aligned priest and 
altar, and two fountains (marked as "{" on the map.) If you use the fountain 
and would normally use it up, you will instead get a warning ("The flow 
reduces to a trickle"): at this point the fountain can be used exactly one 
more time before drying up.

There are four watchmen and a watch captain, all peaceful: but they will get
angry if you break a door down, use a fountain completely up, or attack one 
of them (even by accident when stunned/confused/blinded.) They may also get 
angry if they see you using a fountain or kicking a door even if it does not
break, though you will usually get a friendly warning... There are ordinary 
rooms on both sides, which contain the up and down staircases, and random 
traps and monsters: the other small rooms in the town that are not shops 
contain 3 gnomes, 2 traps and a dwarf. 

There are two variant forms of this town, which differ only in that the 
shops, fountains and rooms are in different places: one version (the older, 
present in NH 3.1.3) is shown below.

                           The Mines' Bottom Level
                          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Gnomish Mines' bottom level is really nothing special, except for one
thing: there is a non-cursed luckstone to be found here, behind secret 
doors. Accompanying the luckstone are 2 diamonds, 3 emeralds, 2 rubies, 
and 2 amethysts, and several other random gems which may or may not be 
valuable.

Scattered about the level are 7 other stones and 2 tools, 6 traps, and the
following monsters: a gnome king, 3 gnome lords, 2 gnomish wizards, 9
ordinary gnomes, 2 hobbits, 3 dwarves, and one random humanoid. There will
also be some other random monsters.

There are two variant forms of the bottom level: the "Mine End" and the 
"Wine Cellar".

The "Mine End"
--------------

In this level, all the gems are placed on the spot marked "*" and stacked in 
this order: diamonds, random stone(s), emeralds, random stone(s), rubies, 
random stone(s), amethysts, luckstone. All walls are undiggable.

The "Wine Cellar"
-----------------

This level has, in addition to the treasures listed above, another secret 
room containing six potions of booze and three random potions: the potions
are marked on the map, appearing in three piles, each consisting of two
potions of booze and one other random potion - one of these three random 
potions is of object detection. There are inscriptions on the floor at (1)
and (2), respectively saying "You are now entering the Gnome King's Wine
Cellar" and "Trespassers will be persecuted!"

The same gems are guaranteed as in the other "Mine End" version of this 
level: i.e. 2 diamonds, 3 emeralds, 2 rubies, 2 emeralds and one 
non-cursed luckstone, plus many other random gems which may or may not
be valuable. They are are in a 2x2 room off to the right, on the four 
spaces marked "*", surrounded by diggable rock (all the area on the right 
of the map is diggable rock.) The walls between the corridors and around 
the central room are undiggable.

                                  The Quest
                                 ===========

Each of the various character classes has what is known as a Quest. On a
certain level, some six to eight levels after the Oracle, you will receive a
telepathic message from your Quest leader. Search this level well, and you
will find a portal that will transport you to the so called "start" level of
the Quest. As soon as you arrive here, search once or twice to mark the spot
where you arrived. This will spare you a lot of time later, when you want to
return to the main dungeon. On this level, your Quest leader will assign you
your Quest (if you fulfill certain conditions). From there, go down and
proceed the the "locate" level, and subsequently to the "goal" level, on
which your nemesis dwells. He has the Bell of Opening and your Quest
Artifact, which you must both seize from him.

In a seperate file "quests.txt", you will see the descriptions of all Quest 
levels, Quest artifacts, quest monsters, the Quest nemesis, and maps of 
each important non-random level (they are different for each class.)

                                 Fort Ludios
                                =============

Well, who did you think is the owner of all those little 2x2 Magical Memory
Vaults containing all that money? It is the legendary King Croesus of Lydia,
the richest king of the ancient world who discovered (the hard way) that 
money cannot buy happiness.  His main vault is located here. Gold and gems 
in abundance, as well as plenty of guards...

The King himself is sitting on his throne (\), surrounded by his audience.
The room next to the place you start (^) is a zoo as well, and both are
marked as such below. The main vault is littered with land mines. The corner
towers contain (trom top left to bottom right) diamonds, rubies, emeralds,
and amethysts.

                                  Gehennom
                                 ==========

Gehennom (G) is 25 to 30 levels deep. All levels, if not specified
otherwise, are maze levels. That is, the maps depicted here are centered and
any space left around it is a maze. Fire traps are abundant, though (unlike
in previous versions) fire resistance is not a condition for survival.

                           The Valley of the Dead
                          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There is no staircase down into the Valley of the Dead, but you can use a
trapdoor in the Castle to enter it. There is a staircase up, though... The
areas marked "gr" are graveyards. Randomly scattered about are lots of human
corpses, two of each class (except priests...). Then, you will find four
weapons and four armour pieces. There is one ruby somewhere, and two other
stones. You will also fine 3 potions, 3 scrolls, 2 wands, 2 rings, 2
spellbooks, and 3 tools. Next to the traps indicated, there are also 5 other
traps. Random monsters include 6 ghosts, 3 vampire bats, a lich, 3 vampires,
4 zombies, and 4 mummies.

The stairs up are somewhere in the maze at the left. Objects found are 2
pieces of armour, 2 weapons, a stone, 2 potions, and 3 scrolls. Random
monsters not shown below are a lich, 3 vampires, and 3 demons. There are 8
random traps.

                                Vlad's Tower

Vlad's Tower used to be part of Gehennom, but is now a seperate branch
thereof. The tower is completely surrounded by stone. Its entrance is at the
tower's bottom; Vlad himself is on the top floor guarding his treasures,
including the Candelabrum of Evocation. The objects and monsters shown are
randomly placed behind the secret doors. Each vampire is guarding a chest.

                             The Wizard's Tower

The Wizard of Yendor's Tower is three floors high. Its entrance is NOT in
the tower itself, and you have to climb up to get at the top room, where
the Wizard of Yendor resides. He carries the Book of the Dead.

                                The Top Level
                                ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Wizard is in the middle of his tower, accompanied by a vampire lord and
a hell hound. To warn him of intruders, he is surrounded by squeaky boards,
two of which are shown. There are four other traps on the level, by the way.
Loot includes a ruby, 2 potions, 2 scrolls, and 3 spellbooks. Only the walls
inside the moat are diggable. There is a randomly generated secret door
somewhere in the walls surrounding the moat (not the top wall). Randomly
placed monsters include a dragon and a giant, and 4 demons.

You arrive at this level through a magic portal in one of the Fake Wizard's
Towers. The place of arrival is marked with a ">" (narmally a "^"). There is
a ladder up to the upper levels of this tower. Only the walls inside the
moat are diggable. Surrounding the ladder up are squeaky bourds, two of
which are shown. Randomly generated monsters are a lich, a dragon, and 3
demons. Loot includes a weapon, a potion, 2 scrolls, and a tool, as well as
an amulet on the ladder up.

                           The Fake Wizard's Tower

In older versions of NetHack, the Wizard of Yendor's Tower was much smaller.
There are two of these fake wizard levels that look the same. One of these
towers contains a magic portal in the middle that will transport you to the
REAL tower, bottom level; the other one has a random amulet on that spot.
The middle spot is surrounded by squeaky boards, by the way.

                              Moloch's Sanctum
                             ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To get here, one must find the vibrating square on the level just above
Moloch's Sanctum. There, apply the Book of the Dead, the Candelabrum of
Evocation and the Bell of Opening to gain entrance to Moloch's Sanctum. A
lot of monsters and traps are shown below, but there are also some randomly
generated ones: 6 traps, 4 pieces of armour, 2 weapons, a stone, 4 potions,
6 scrolls, 2 liches, and 3 vampires.

                              The Astral Plane

The top-most level, the Astral Level, has 3 temples with an altar. Players
are supposed to sacrifice the Amulet of Yendor on the appropriate altar.
You will arrive in the corridor at the bottom somewhat left or right of the
middle of the screen. Monsters in the circular rooms are Moloch's followers
and Death, Pestilence, and Famine. The priests and angels in the other rooms
are either hostile or peaceful, dependent on their alignment. Next to the
monsters shown, there are (randomly placed) 3 liches, 3 vampires, and 3
dragons.
