Altorians:
Only those born on Altorian soil can petition for citizenship. Only citizens can own land, attend the universities, or serve on the councils. Do you think you might want to play a citizen of Altoria? Most citizens here are human. All citizens are required to send their children to common school. If you play an Altorian citizen, it is assumed you can read and write.
If you play an Altorian Orc, you will most likely hail from the southern regions. Most Orcs are immigrants, residents who came here from the Wildlands. Some Orcish families have been here for more than one generation. The children born on Altorian soil have the right to claim citizenship. It's not required, they have a choice.
There is an Elven settlement in the 'Old Forest' region. They have treaties with the Kingdom of Altoria and are not intruded upon. Because of recent conflicts within their communities, a number of Elves have left their homes and are now living in Altorian towns and villages. Elves do not consider themselves Altorian citizens; they have their own tribes and customs.
Most Ogres in Altoria are just passing through, but there is the occasional immigrant who has settled here. Check out the Ogre supplement before you make a decision on whether or not your Ogre character is an Altorian citizen. Most Ogres are very proud of their Qabarian heritage.
Other races living in here will probably not have Altorian citizenship. No races are barred from living in Altoria. All residents are expected to abide by Altorian law and pay taxes, regardless of citizenship.
Dress:
To play an Altorian, you should look the part. If you are playing a non-human, check your racial supplement guide for costuming. If you live in Altoria, regardless of your race, you may choose to adopt Altoria fashion.
The current men's fashion in Altoria, for commoners, is a short tunic, usually belted at the waist, and loose braies of plain cloth. The common women wear ankle length tunics girded at waist or hip. Some wear skirts with belted short tunics or chemises. Cloaks are worn for warmth and simple caps and headscarves are often worn. This is the standard garb of the peasant classes suitable for any race on Ereth. Sweatpants, karate pants, or anything similar can pass for braies. Any long skirt works well for females. A simple, loose, pullover top without buttons or zippers stands in for a tunic. Wrap a sash around your waist and you're ready to go.
The merchant classes wear similar clothes in fabrics that are more expensive. Those who can afford it wear jewelry as befits their station. Men often wear a fancy dagger carried in a decorated sheath. Baldrics are considered fashionable. The women wear the keys of their household, denoting their status, on a chain about their waist.
The nobility wear more elaborate outfits. The men often wear full, puffed breeches in place of braies. Usually a tabard is worn with the person's symbol, colors or other identifying marks placed on it. You are welcome to design a family crest to display on your garb. Symbols for the noble houses of Altoria are shown in the appendix. Sometimes the tabard is replaced with or in addition to a fancy baldric. Women wear long gowns with elaborate girdles. The nobility wear fine jewelry to emphasize their status. Both sexes wear necklaces, rings, bracelets, and use fancy pins and broaches. Highly decorative pouches in elegant materials are widely used by both sexes. If you want to get really gussied up, play a wealthy noble.
Both men and women of nobility wear hooded cloaks in expensive fabrics or fur for warmth. Caps and hats in similar materials are popular. Decorative gloves are a mark of distinction for both men and women. Your apparent place in society will be reflected in your dress.
Town guards, royal beadles, guild members, and others may have garb requirements, also. Check the appendix if you think your character might need a specific uniform or insignia. Some guilds will have identifying marks. The special insignias can be reproduced very simply; please don't let this stop you from playing a character that requires special garb.
University scholars wear tabards with the symbol of their university displayed. Their rank within the university system is shown by the insignia on their gorgets. There are twelve universities in Altoria. Each university is devoted to a specialized area of study. The university insignias are shown in the appendix.
Altorians worship the god Toran. The symbol of Toran is worn by many Altorians. The priests of Toran wear tabards or a gorget displaying the symbol of Toran and their insignia of rank. These symbols are shown in the appendix. The High Priests wear a full garnache, an outer garment that covers the wearer from neck to ankles. It has wide sleeves cut as part of the garment. They wear an elaborately decorated gorget displaying the symbol of Toran over the symbol of the sacred scroll.
