Sailor Moon
Sailor Moon is a super-heroine/comedy anime that is also defined as a "magical girl" type anime. The story centers around a girl named Usagi (Serena in the English version) who is a ditzy lazy junior high shool student who eats and cries too much. She gets chosen to be Sailor Moon and to battle evil demons who attempt to drain energy from innocent victims. The comedy is Usagi is not exactly the exemplary heroine. She whines a lot and is scared easily. She meets other Sailor Scouts: Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Venus. Together they fight against the demons and when they are not fighting demons, they fight over guys and shop, just like most teenage girls.
Sailor Moon is a Japanese television series that was very popular. Dic made a dubbed version for North America and that became popular too. The show was actually made for little girls but for some reason it had wide appeal, even with boys (probably because of the very short skirts the Sailor Scouts wore when they transformed). The North American version only showed some of the Japanese episodes and it was censored to meet the silly standards of American networks. The North American version didn't show the other Sailor Scouts (Saior Uranus, Sailor Neptune, Sailor Pluto, Sailor Saturn). From what I heard, Dic may be making dubbed versions of the newer episodes with Uranus (Alex), Neptune (Michelle), and Pluto (Sharon). However, I was told that TBS who were supposed to show the new episodes will not be showing it. Despite the early time slots Sailor Moon gets, it is still popular, just look at all the homepages dedicated to it.
Many Anime fans either love Sailor Moon or they hate it. The silly comedy, short skirts, and catchy phrases are the reasons why people like it. Some people hate it because of the silliness and the characters act like, well, like teenage girls. I personally find Sailor Moon humorous. Keep in mind it was directed at little girls, so a lot of it is silly. Trying to comment on Sailor Moon like it was a serious work of anime is a little pretentious, which is kinda like debating whether Jerry Lewis is a genius or not...

Yakumo Fujii is an ordinary high school student (with an unusual
job :-)) until he runs into Pai...literally. Pai appears to
be a young (and cute) girl who is a bit lost. Pai is actually
a survivor of a mythical race called the Sanjiyan who are all
but extinct. In effect, Pai is an immortal 'monster' with 3
eyes who is 300 years old. Yakumo's first encounter with Pai
leads to his death, upon which he is resurrected as her 'Wu',
an immortal and indestructible servant of a Sanjiyan. He joins
her in her quest to become human.
