Letting Go

By Maia

Part 1

A beautiful Chinese woman walked silently out of the large apartment complex. She shivered from the cool midnight chill. As always, she strolled toward the direction of the park. Her hair flowed back with every movement of the cool breeze. Passerby's would take a glance at her, then couldn't resist a second look. Her angelic and serene complexion gave an aura of innocence, one that was rarely seen in the harsh world they occupied. Each would be set in a mass of confusion when they met her eyes…sadness. The dreadful emotion was clearly present in the striking brown orbs.
Whether she was oblivious to the stares or basically didn't pay attention, she proceeded to the middle of the park. Months…months she was there again in the same exact place. Looking over the shimmering surface of a small lake. She closed her eyes; unsuccessfully choking back tears.
"Here I am again.", softly whispering, "…here I am again thinking about you."
"But now…I've come to let you go."
She fell to her knees, kneeling close to the edge of the water. With the tip of her finger, she traced the image of a heart…then rapidly splashed the image away.
*No more pain…. And…longing…*
"Goodbye Ryu."

***San Francisco, California***

Ken awoke with the sun gleaming into his eyes. With a moan, he got out of bed and got ready for breakfast. After getting ready, he went down stairs to find Ryu and Sakura already at the table.
"Morning!"
They both looked up and smiled. "Hey."
After a few moments of silence, Ken looked at Sakura.
"Hey, um…did you get those pictures from Christmas developed yet?"
She looked up and nodded her head. "Yep! They turned out great. I thought that since Chun Li couldn't be with us, I should send some to her."
At the sound of Chun Li's name, Ryu looked up in astonishment.
Ken was taken back. "You sent them to her?!"
Sakura was confused. "Um, yeah. Don't worry I made plenty of copies." Casting a dreamy look at Ryu, "I wouldn't want to forget the day we got together."
Ryu turned red and mumbled an agreement…or so it seemed.
Ken thought seriously. *The pictures. Oh gosh Chun Li…the pictures with Ryu and Sakura together. Hugging each other, holding hands…kissing under the mistletoe.*
Ken was the only one aware of the deep love Chun Li held over his best friend. He quickly excused himself, leaving two bewildered roommates. He rushed toward the library and made sure that no one was in the room. Picking up the phone he dialed.
The phone rang numerously.
*Come on, come on. Please pick up. *
At the sound of the receiver picking up, his face turned hopeful. Then, he winced.
*Damn machine. *
Sighing, he gently laid down the receiver and solemnly walked away.
*I hope that she's okay. *
