What is a MODCHIP?

The modchip is a small microchip (formally known as the PIC12c508 chip) used
to power up the SONY PLAYSTATION(PSX) to be able to play copies and
imports. Because it must send electrical signals to and from the modchip, this
chip must be soldered onto the PSX motherboard( not a tough job with a
modchip from the MODCHIP FACTORY).

Here is the process.

    The Playstation is turned on. The CPU in the Playstation is expecting to
    recieve a Bootcode from the game CD via the Laser section of the
    PlayStation.
    Since the Bootcode of a Playstation Game CD cannot be copied via publically
    available means, no such bootcode is present on a backup copy of a game
    CD. This means that the Playstation will not recognize the backup and will
    not boot properly.
    Imports contain a country code that the PSX check durring the boot
    sequence. If the country codes do not match, the boot sequence halts.
    The MODCHIP actually generates and sends the Bootcode directly to the
    Playstation CPU and effectively bypassing the bootcode to be generated from
    the Laser Section allowing the user to play CD-R backups and imports.

In short,

    the MODCHIP allows you to play CD-R backups
    the MODCHIP allows you to play imports
    the MODCHIP does not affect the use of genuine PSX games
    the MODCHIP does not affect the use of music CD's in the PSX (but who
    really uses their PSX to play music CD's?)

models (SCPH-5501, SCPH-5502, SCPH-5552 , SCPH-7001).

glue bonds paper together. A special metal with a low melting point (called
solder) is melted on a tool called a soldering iron (which can be purchased at
Radio Shack). The soldering iron is then used like a glue bottle to "stick" two
metal joints together. It is a process that is easy to learn and master.

 

CD-R's is the short name for a recordable compact disc (CD). Simply, it is a CD
that can be written on through the use of a CD-Writer (or burner) drive.
Playstation backup CD-R's are copies of an original Playstation game that can
only be played through the use of the deluxe modchip.
