Defender

Defender of the heart,
I place myself between her and the world
Trying to save her from the pain that is everywhere,
Pain that is inflicted on me.
I long to feel her arms around me,
To feel her lips on mine,
For only she can heal my wounds.
But I am the strong one, the brave one.
So I stand tall, the wall she hides behind,
The rock she puts her back against.
Too content being comforted, she cannot see
The love that flares when I hold her,
The fierce desire I feel when she is near.
Nor could I let her, for fear of her rejection.
For though she suspects, she cannot accept
That I live for her, fight for her.
And I would sacrifice all for her,
Or just the chance to throw off Defender,
And become Savior.
