The dragons of the Dragonlance legends are majestic and terrifying creatures, whose principal attraction is perhaps their great age. They are divided between good and evil, without the ambiguity or callousness typical of most of the other characters in this book. The benign and the perverse dragons are equally beautiful and powerful, the only difference is in their actions. The good dragons are differentiated externally by their metallic bronze, silver and golden scales. The bronze dragons are bellicose, but also sociable, as demonstrated by Khirsah and Flamestrike. The golden dragons, who are haughty and majestic, are more akin to gods than humans; their main exponent is Pyros, Ansalon is the most ancient and their most assiduous mount is Fizban, the incarnation of the god of Good. However, the silver dragons are those which hold the greatest fascination for the reader. Let us remember, for example, the silver woman-dragon who accompanies the hero Huma in his odyssey, or Silvara the elfin seductress who had a beautiful but tormented love affair with Prince Gilthanas. As for the dragons of evil, they all have similar coloring: white, green, blue, red and black scales. Noteworthy among the white dragons is Sleet, the guardian of the Wall of Ice, while prominent among the green dragons is Cyan Bloodbane, who created nightmares in the mind of the elf king Lorac until he went completely mad. The principal black dragon is Onyx, the ferocious guardian of the Disks of Mishakal, in the ruins of Xak Tsaroth. Meanwhile the squadrons of red and blue dragons mostly take part in great battles. Distuinquished red dragon include Ember, the mount of the evil Verminaard, and Flamestrike, also know as Matafleur, the 'maternal' female who kills a fellow dragon in the battle of Pax Tharkas herself and dies. Of the blue dragons, the most memorable is Skie, the loyal companion of Kitiara, the feared and evil dark queen, who was responsible of the death of the brave noble Sturm Brightblade. The gods of the Dragonlance also sometimes adopted reptilian forms: Paladine, the god of Good, is the great platinum dragon, and Takhisis, the queen of darkness, turns into a five-headed dragon awho personifies and perpetuates the infernal pleiad. Nor should we forget a species peculiar to this saga and directly related to the dragons, the draconians. A perversion of the Sons of Good, these creatures hatched from eggs which the evil reptiles stole fromtheir good brothers. Bewitched at birth by a black witch, the draconians constitute an aberrant sub-species of the most distinguished creatures that populate the world of Krynn. |
