Description
Phantonus is a tall (1.89 mt.), handsome man in his early thirties, he has long red hair, which he wears tied back in a ponytail, and a well groomed mustache and beard; his eyes are deep green. His skin is a little paler than usual, probably the result of one too many parties and all night celebrations, he is quite slim, and he looks very frail.
His frail constitution and his usually kind demeanor may make him appear weak to some people, a mistake many have comitted to their everlasting regret.
He always dresses in the finest clothes, many made from the rarest materials of faraway lands, he takes great pride in his wardrobe.
He is usually found in the company of several ladies, and Being a handsome man, it is not rare to see him at parties entertaining a group of beautiful ladies. When found in hostile situations, however, Phantonus' gaze is enough to make the skin of a seasoned warrior crawl.
History
Phantonus is not from the PC's nation, he comes from a faraway land, preferably a center of culture and learning, on which he was the third son of an important noble.
Being of noble birth, his education was left in the care of a famous tutor, from whom he learned mathematics, philosophy, history, literature, etiquette, lenguages, astronomy and many other things. His teacher was always impressed by his pupil's intelligence and thirst of knowledge, and so he recommended to his father that the boy be educated in the ways of magic.
And so, at the age of sixteen, Phantonus left his father's province heading for the capital to learn from a respected wizard of the king's court. He studied for six years, quickly becoming the wizard's favorite apprentice, his magic power grew greatly, and it was even rumored that in a few years he would become the aging wizard's sucessor.
Unfortunately, being free of his father's vigilant eye, and seduced by the decadent lifestyle in the king´s court, Phantonus soon disregarded his studies, spending most of the time with women or at savage all night parties. Getting little sleep and enjoying himself whenever he could, he started to ignore his duties. All of this leading to his teacher's rejection from further tutelage.
When his father heard of this, it brought him great shame, his hopes for him forever broken. Phantonus' father disinherited him and refused to send him any money. When this happened, his life changed drastically, he was ruined, and his "friends" quickly forgot him.
Without a single gold piece in his pocket, he was forced to wander the city for two years, working here and there, eating whenever and whatever he could, sleeping wherever he was allowed to. It was during this time that he learned to use his magic powers to survive, performing small tasks for money, or using them to steal, suffering all kinds of humiliations along the way.
At the end of those two years, he gathered what little money he had and boarded a ship to try his luck in the lands beyond the sea. When he arrived, he joined an adventuring party and worked as a mercenary for a few years, increasing his magical knowledge and acquiring great fame as a powerful wizard with little morals.
He promised himself he would not live as a beggar ever again, and he took whatever bounty he was offered, whether it was good or evil.
His fame brought him to the attention of a powerful and ambitious noble, and Phantonus soon became his chief enforcer, killing whomever he was told, and taking care of whatever bothersome situation quickly and efficiently.
He is now the noble's most trusted advisor and right hand man, helping his master in his dream of eventually becoming king of the land, unfortunately, it seems some foolish adventurers have stepped in the way to the throne...
Roleplaying Phantonus
Phantonus is a snob, nothing matters more to him than mantaining his status quo, he is very elegant and has a lot of class, he knows all the protocols and puts them to good use, usually with the ladies. And he certainly is not over getting a cheap laugh out of humiliating "ignorant brutes" such as the PCs.
His snobbish appearance often hides the fact that he is a conniving genius, a worthy foe to any party of adventurers foolish enough to step in his way. Whenever this happens, Phantonus is cruel and cold, his acidic voice filled with sarcasm, he loves torturing enemies and humiliating them before their death.
Even though he is more than able of facing a medium level party of adventurers on his own, Phantonus never gets his hands dirty, preferring intrigue and the use of agents. This can pose a problem to his enemies, since he takes great care of not leaving any trace of his or his master's influence.
He is, however, very quick to anger, especially when anyone dares to defy him in public or humiliates him. For example, a daring captured PC that spits at him will not have long to suffer before he is burned to a crisp.
A very good way I've found of emphasizing Phantonus personality is to make him cast his spells (at least shouting the names) in latin, how can you do that?, just follow
