I was born in the wilds of the Upper Trollfang in a small, transitory settlement of trackers and woodsmen. My mother was an elf, part of the noble class. She left her titles behind to be with my father and together they had a wonderful life in the wilds of Elanthia. Though strong for an elf, she was not prepared for the difficult labor of a pair of half human children and despite all that could be done for her she died giving birth to us. My father was grief stricken and for a long period unable to do more then hold us in his arms and weep.
The group became our family. Many were very independent and some were gone for months or even years at a time. The settlement became a place to trade stories, a roving base that moved on the whims of nature as each place became inconvenient to stay at. As soon as I could walk my father left for a month sojourn out into the wilds. Everyone raised the children of everyone else, teaching what they were best at and letting others teach their specialties. One old crotchety ranger went by the name Roughbark and was so old no one knew if he had had another. He tried to act brusque with everyone but couldn't hide he had a soft spot for me, the golden curled little girl, teaching me effective hunting and ambushing for weeks at a time in the wilds.
My sister stayed in camp. Laquishiona shunned the wilds, not happy they had stolen her father for the long periods he was gone. She understood my desire and his to be a part of nature, but she did not share that affinity. She learned the arts of hiding and stalking as well as how to defend herself and others with weapons. Her focus became the camp itself. She learned to build and tinker with what was available. Soon she was known for her abilities with opening locked boxes and even some of the veteran rangers were soon bringing back chests from intelligent creatures they had to kill to preserve the sanctity of the forest.
I loved it in the woods I would sit at my favorite spot by a stream and listen to the music the water made as it flowed though our woods, and the animals not seeming to fear me would come to graze on the soft new blades of grass or even lie next to me and bask in the suns rays as it filtered through the tree branches.
One day a tragedy occurred in my fifteenth year in the settlement. A boy that was born to Petal Shadelock, named Willie. He was challenged by some of the older boys in the settlement to go and bring back a bear. Some of them claimed they had to and pointed to all the bear skins in the settlement to show their "kills". The boy was torn to pieces. It took several days to piece together what had happened, not being able to find the boy and then figuring out why he had done such a foolish thing. The children who had done the horrid thing were banished, even their parents so ashamed that they turned their backs on them. The pain ripped the settlement apart. Though many lingered for years after, slowly fewer and fewer returned from their journeys to the memories of pain, until it was only a husk of its former warmth and comfort that I knew as home.
My sister left soon after the incident, unable to stand the strain and wanting to go to a more civilized area. It was no surprise to the ones that did return that I spent most of it alone in the woods since my father would leave me for long periods to go hunt, I think seeing me each day as I grew more and more into the lovely creature my mother was tore at his heart and he couldnt bear it. sighs sadly
It was in my twenty-first year that I left the settlement, one of the last. My father spent much of his time away but; as always time seemed to heal my father's pain to some degree and we managed to stay close, I would go out to meet him often and he would show me his skills and help me hone my own. We kept in touch, and many a time we go hunting together. I decided to try civilized life for a while, choosing the town of Wehnimer's Landing to spend some time with my sister. After a day or two in the city a man came up and told me to follow him. After my initial shock I felt compelled to do something I have never done before. I followed him as he had told me to do, maybe it was the way he carried himself, so proud and handsome or the muscles that seem to flex as he walked (blushes prettily) None of the men in my settlement looked like him and I felt a stirring deep inside. He went to the boutique in town and got me several items to wear and took me to Silvergate for a meal. There he introduced himself as Jaydon and told me he would take care of me. My fury at that was enough to snap me from my daze.
I howled at him, screaming at him for his audacity and I didn't need anyone to do anything for me. I was about to stalk off when he quietly said sit and somehow the quiet authority in his voice made me do as he said. He calmly told me again he would take care of me and that was the end of the matter. The security and strength he seemed to wear around himself like a cloak enveloped me and I felt suddenly whole and safe the pain I felt inside seemed to just vanish to this mans enveloping warmth. I then agreed and have done as he asked ever since then, following him like I feel I must. He is very gentle and careful about my needs, always making sure I am ok before he tends to himself. I am very happy when I am around him and believe I truly care for him as he does for me .....I dont think we love each other its too soon for that; but, I hope maybe one day this quite man will open up to me and we can lead a happy, loving life together.
I had a recent tragedy in my life, my sister has died in the wilds and I am grief stricken. Only Jaydon's strength and the family I find in my House Willow Hall keeps me from falling completely apart. I shall always miss you, Laqui.
