Early mytholigical vampires did not sleep in coffins up until the 19th century, only the VERY rich could afford coffins, and so much of the history of vampires did not include a 'secured' burial. Indeed, it was the very precarious nature of medieval burial that fosterd the fear that vampires could very easily rise from their final resting place in the earth.
Even up to the time of Dracula, vampires did not require coffins to slumber. All that was required was that the vampire rested in it's native soul. When Dracula came to England, he brought crate upon of his native soul with him, and it was that soul in which he rested and required his strenth.

In more recent times, the best explanation for the commonality of the coffin to all vampires stories rests in the fact that vampires are dead; today, you bury your dead in coffins. The coffin also provides protection from sunlight (which is thought in modern times to damage or kill vampires). However, the coffin has provided a perfect target for te vampire hunter....a vitally important aspect for the modern vampire story. Still, in these more secular times, the most modern of vampire writers are again challanging the myths of old. In Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicals as well as oter novels and movies in this decade, vampires require nothing but protection from sunlight. Crypts, sealed rooms, and even the earth itself is sufficient for there needs....

"Vampirism was one of the most demonic outbreaks of mass hysteria ever to sweet the world. It's origins are rooted at the beginning of time amd almost all of them are founded on superstition." ....Anthony Masters author of the Natural History of The Vampire.
"The concept of the vampire is not only firmly rooted in legends and folk-myths of antiquity, but also established by facts of history, and eyewitness accounts." ...Devendra P. varma author of The Vampire in Legend, Love, and Literature
Although people might think some of this stuff these writers are writing is true....maybe they should rethink things over....
