Set the morning of the Pilot episode. After "I Saw her STanding there" and before "With a Little Help from my Friends". The Beatles Files: "A Day in the Life" by Christina Shuy cshuy@netcom.com The basement office was crowded and unkept. A lighted slide table with slides on it was the only illumination other than the flurecent overhead lights. Special Agent Fox Mulder had been working late. At the moment, he had his head down on his desk, his glasses skewed on his face. A new song started on the radio as the alarm went off. "I read the news today oh boy About a lucky man who made the grade And though the news was rather sad Well I just had to laugh I saw the photograph. He blew his mind out in a car He didn't notice that the lights had changed" He dreamed, the images being of a man in a car with a smoking gun after having just offed himself. The man was unrecognisable, but the smoke smelled of cigarettes. The dream seemed to be set in England. "A crowd of people stood and stared They'd seen his face before Nobody was really sure If he was from the House of Lords." He dreamed he was on the street near the House of Lords, though he could only remember having been there once. Nothing looked too familiar, though. Everything seemed hazy. "I saw a film today oh boy The English Army had just won the war A crowd of people turned away but I just had to look Having read the book. I'd love to turn you on" Then, he found himself in World War II, just at the very end of it, still in England, though the images were strangely technocolour and psychadelic. "Woke up, fell out of bed, Dragged a comb across my head Found my way downstairs and drank a cup, And looking up I noticed I was late. Found my coat and grabbed my hat Made the bus in seconds flat Found my way upstairs and had a smoke, Somebody spoke and I went into a dream" Mulder woke up bleary, the song drifting through the radio he'd forgotten he'd set the alarm to. Putting his glasses back on straight, he sighed and went back to work, noting that it was a new day. There were many things he had to do today, including meeting his new partner. Fun fun fun. "I read the news today oh boy Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire And though the holes were rather small They had to count them all Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall. I'd love to turn you on" The song came to the thundering conclusion and Mulder reached over, turning off the radio alarm for the day. 'Time to get back to work.' he thought, turning back to the slides he was arranging in the tray. At the same time, the elevator came to the basement. Dana Scully walked out and headed for the only office she knew of. SHe knocked on the door marked "Fox Mulder Special Agent". "No one here but the FBI's Most unWanted." said a man's voice from inside. OPening the door, she introduced herself. "Agent Mulder, I'm Dana Scully. I"ve been assigned to work with you." -the end-
