The sales clerk interrupted a moment of frustration and Mulder looked at her with what amounted to relief. "Uh... yeah. I'm trying to pick out a ring for... someone special." Mulder could already feel the grin in his face. It always happened when he thought about the woman he loved. "But I can't see the prices." "Oh, well, how can I help you, then? Which ring were you interested in?" The woman smiled. Mulder started to study her when the song playing in the mall's main area caught his attention. "Baby's good to me, you know, She's happy as can be, you know, She said so. I'm in love with her and I feel fine." 'And no matter how much she tells me -I'm fine, Mulder-, I always know she isn't... Because when she is, she usually says something different...' he thought. "Baby says she's mine, you know, She tells me all the time, you know, She said so. I'm in love with her and I feel fine." After a long business trip, Dana had only arrived back home last night. He'd had something to take care of first thing in the morning or else he would have gladly accepted her invitation to spend the night. Unfortunately, the 'first thing in the morning' business had stretched well into the afternoon, and now he was standing at a jewelry store in a shopping mall, having gone through every other jewelry store in three state area of Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. No luck anywhere. He was starting to lose patience... no, wait, he'd already lost patience. Now, he was purely frustrated. "I'm so glad that she's my little girl. She's so glad, she's telling all the world That her baby buys her things, you know. He buys her diamond rings, you know, She said so. She's in love with me and I feel fine, mmm." "Sir?" The sales clerk was somewhat confused at the somewhat dazed smile on Mulder's lips. Mulder didn't hear her, and when he started to sway from side to side with the music, she listened more closely and started to laugh at the sight. Mulder, on the other hand, was busy making plans as to how he was going to do what he had to do, as well as absently looking for a ring. "Baby says she's mine, you know, She tells me all the time, you know, She said so. I'm in love with her and I feel fine. SUddenly, his eyes lit upon it. The perfect ring. It suited the woman he loved perfectly. He could see the light in her eyes match the light in the stones. Besides, she was worth whatever he had to pay... I'm so glad that she's my little girl. She's so glad, she's telling all the world That her baby buys her things, you know. He buys her diamond rings, you know, She said so. She's in love with me and I feel fine, mmm, mmm." The song was over. He smiled, pleased with himself. "Miss?" The clerk was just turning away when he got her attention. "Yes, sir? What can I help you with?" "That one." he said, pointing to the ring in the display case. As the clerk looked at the ring in direct line of Mulder's finger, she smiled. "Your lady friend will like that ring. Is it a special occasion or a special person?" she asked, and at that moment, Mulder thought that the clerk reminded him of Scully's mother... He smiled. "Or is it both?" "Both... definitely both." Mulder's smile got even wider. "Then it is a wise choice." The clerk took the ring and put it in a ring box after giving the emerald and two diamonds a good polish. Mulder pulled out his credit card and the sale was made. As he set foot outside the store, another wave of nervousness hit him. WHat he had just done was very important... just as tonight was. After all, it wasn't every night he was going to propose to the one woman who had held his heart for so long. Dana Scully. Now he only hoped she would say yes. -The End- To be continued in "WHen I'm Sixty Four" (already written) "The Truth is Out There.
