They are used without permission, as I can't afford to get permission. I'm not planning to make any money from this story anyway. Once again, the song used in this (and every other one of this series) belong to the Beatles. This one also belongs to the team of Lennon/McCartney, without whom, there would not have been half the Beatles. I couldn't resist this one. *grin* Rating: G Category: V, H, a touch of R... Summary: Mulder tries to get in touch with Senator Matheson, but the on-hold music proves to be hilarious. Spoilers: none. The Beatles Files: "The Fool On The Hill" by Christina Shuy cshuy@netcom.com "We're not getting far on this paperwork..." Mulder sighed, tossing the file folder back on his desk. "I'm going to get lunch, Mulder. Do you want anything?" Scully stood up, stretched, and closed the folder on her desk. "Going to the usual place, Scully?" he asked and she nodded. "Orange chicken, steamed rice, and veggies." He handed her a five dollar bill, kissing the back of her hand as he did so. "Right. I'll be back." she smiled. She shut the door behind her and Mulder reached for the phone, dialling a number. "Senator Matheson's office." The voice on the other end of the phone was irritatingly calm. "This is Special Agent Fox Mulder. I would like to speak with the Senator please." "Please hold, Agent Mulder. I will see if the Senator is in his office." Before Mulder could say anything, the connection was put on hold and the music from a local radio station filled his ears. "Day after day alone on the hill, The man with the foolish grin is keeping perfectly still, But nobody wants to know him, They can see that he's just a fool, And he never gives an answer, But the fool on the hill Sees the sun going down, And the eyes in his head, See the world spinning around." Mulder couldn't help but do a double-take. The song somehow was perfect for what he sometimes thought of the know-nothings on Capitol Hill... the same ones who were being controlled by *plausible deniability*. That in itself was a joke. The Consortium knew what they were doing. "Well on his way his head in a cloud, The man of a thousand voices talking perfectly loud But nobody ever hears him, Or the sound he appears to make, And he never seems to notice, But the fool on the hill . . . Nobody seems to like him They can tell what he wants to do. And he never shows his feelings, But the fool on the hill . . ." The music cut out just as the secretary returned. "I'm sorry, Agent Mulder, but the Senator seems to have stepped out of the office. Would you like to leave a message?" Mulder, trying to keep control of his composure, managed a strangled, "No, thank you. I will call back." before hanging up the reciever and bursting out laughing. "Mulder?" Scully's voice drifted in from the doorway where she was standing with the takeout lunch she had gone out to get for both of them in her hands. "Just tried to get in touch with Senator Matheson... turns out, he's got a radio station on his 'on-hold' music... and it was playing 'Fool on the Hill' at the time I was on hold. Scully grinned, walking in and closing the door behind her. "That fits." she answered, putting the plastic bag with the food container within on his desk before walking over to her desk and sitting down. "Here's lunch. Let's get back to work before SKinner throws a fit." "Thanks, Dana..." he said, and she smiled. "Eat... Let's get back to work." -End- -- "The Truth is Out There.
