Rating: G, Series, Summary: A pre-X-Files story. Mulder ruminates over how Phoebe Green ruined his life immediately after she dumps him. In the 'Beatles Files' universe, this comes after "I Saw Her Standing There". Spoilers: "Fire", but only because it involves Phoebe Green. Note: From the way Mulder acted in "Fire", it seemed as though Phoebe was more than somewhat abusive to him, so I decided to that that into consideration with this story. The Beatles Files: "For No One" by Christina Shuy cshuy@netcom.com Fox Mulder was doing what he had been doing for the past several days. Moping. The radio was on in his apartment. He'd even been ditching class. The song just starting made him wince. Far too many reminders of his current situation. "Your day breaks, your mind aches You find that all the words of kindness linger on When she no longer needs you" Phoebe Green, a woman whom he thought was going to be the love of his life... what a joke that turned out to be. She had stated flat out several days earlier that she didn't love him. In fact, she'd never loved him at all. She'd done this to see exactly how badly he could be completely screwed up. And she'd said so, then asked him to hold her. "She wakes up, she makes up She takes her time and doesn't feel she has to hurry She no longer needs you" What was worse? She had told him she didn't want anything more to do with him after... well... *he* had thought it was making love, but apparently to her, it had only been sex. Even if it hadn't actually gone that far. The incident on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's tombstone resulted in intercourse, certainly, but he hadn't exactly been willing. "And in her eyes you see nothing No sign of love behind the tears Cried for no one A love that should have lasted years! You want her, you need her And yet you don't believe her when she said her love is dead You think she needs you" She had played him for a fool right from the start. On a few occasions, she had even forced him to do a few things that made him nauseous, even though he didn't exactly say no. He hadn't been willing. That was part of the problem with their entire 'relationship' as it was. He had lost his entire sense of who he was and did everything for her, which was why it hurt all the more when she decided it was over. "And in her eyes you see nothing No sign of love behind the tears Cried for no one A love that should have lasted years! You stay home, she goes out She says that long ago she knew someone but now he's gone She doesn't need him Your day breaks, your mind aches There will be time when all the things she said will fill your head You won't forget her" He sighed. Of course he wouldn't forget her. The curse of the photographic memory, after all. A knock came at the door. "Mulder? Mulder, are you in there?" a woman's voice, not Phoebe, was on the other side. ***** There was a persistent knock at the door. But when he went to open the door, there was no one there. He could hear Phoebe's faint laughter and it made him sick. The door kept knocking, even after he had just closed it. "Mulder, open the door." said a woman's voice. A very familiar woman's voice. Mulder jolted awake. The nightmare had not been his usual one. But he remembered the time in his life when what he had just dreamed had actually happened. Victoria Jensen, a close friend, had been at the door that time, though in the dream he'd found no one at the door, which made him feel even more alone. "And in her eyes you see nothing No sign of love behind the tears Cried for no one A love that should have lasted years!" "Mulder! I don't know why you locked the connecting door. Please open it! I heard you crying... " a muffled woman's voice was heard. Sighing, he got up from the bed in the hotel room to answer the door. He'd managed to leave the radio on all night, and the dream that had disrupted what little sleep he got had resulted from the just ended song. "Mulder? Are you alright? Please open the door." It was Scully's voice on the other side of the connecting door. "Yeah, Scully... just a dream." he managed to mumble out as he opened the connecting door. The sight of Dana Scully was a relief to him. "Mulder, are you alright?" Dana Scully's eyes were full of worry and concern. For a split second, Fox Mulder wondered why. 'How about -because she loves you-, you idiot!' his heart prompted. "Bad dream." he murmured as he pulled her into his room and into his arms. He felt her nod. SHe understood. He felt her arms go around his waist and he kissed the top of her head. "I love you. I'm right here if you want to talk about it." she murmured out, muffled by his chest. "Maybe later... I love you, too." he said, holding her tight, the tears slowly filling his eyes. Everything was fine now. He was with the one person who truly loved him for who he was. And he loved her too. And this love was going to last... for many, many years. -The End- Note: the ending takes place after "P. S. I Love You" "The Truth is Out There.
