The Beatles Files:  "In My Life"

     Mulder walked into his apartment sullenly.  Things had not gone well 
and he was more than positive that not only was his personal relationship 
with Dana Scully finished, so was his professional one.  And he valued the 
personal one *much* more.  She was his life, and she was more than aware 
of that.  Flopping on the couch, he flipped on the radio.
     "This is a song dedicated to Fox from Dana.  Dana says to let you 
know, Fox, that you are the best thing that has happened to her in a very 
long time." the deejay related in an emotionally charged voice.
     The song started up and Mulder found himself on the verge of tears.
   
  "There are places I'll remember
   All my life though some have changed
   Some forever not for better"

     His phone rang and he reached over to pick it up.
     "Mulder."
     "It's me." Scully's voice smiled over the line and he could hear the 
echo of the same radio station in the background.
     "I heard the dedication."
     "I'm glad you did."

  "Some have gone and some remain
   All these places have their moments
   With lovers and friends I still can recall
   Some are dead and some are living
   In my life I've loved them all"

     "Scully... Dana... What is the song supposed to mean?"
     "Listen to the words, Mulder."
     And Fox Mulder listened... and wept.
   
  "But of all these friends and lovers
   There is no one compares with you
   And these memories lose their meaning
   When I think of love as something new"

     Mulder remembered the first time he had told her he loved her.  The 
Beatles seemed to bring out the emotions in him which he had though were 
locked securely away.  As the tears streamed down his face, he knew those 
emotions were not as locked away as he had thought.  He loved Dana 
Katherine Scully.  With all his heart.

  "Though I know I'll never lose affection
   For people and things that went before
   I know I'll often stop and think about them
   In my life I love you more"

     "I love you, Dana..." he spoke softly, and Dana could hear the tears 
in his voice.
     "I love you too, Fox.  I just wanted you to know...  I may be angry 
with you, but I have not, nor will I ever, stopped loving you. "
     "I'm sorry I'm so hard-headed."
     "Mulder..." the amusement in her voice made him smile, even through 
his tears. "You wouldn't be you if you weren't so hard-headed.  I just 
don't appriecate being ditched all the time.  Even if you think it might 
be for my own good.  I'm your *partner*.  In more ways than just the 
professional.  I want to be treated as an equal."
     "I'm sorry.  Sometimes things go to auto-pilot and I go into 
'overprotective older brother' mode.  I can't promise you I won't ever 
ditch you again-"
     "The next time you do, you might end up dead, have you ever 
considered that?"
     "Yeah... as I was saying, I can't promise I won't do that again, but 
I can promise that I will do my best to stay with you."
   
  "Though I know I'll never lose affection
   For people and things that went before

     "I miss you, Fox... "
     "I miss you too... I wanna come over."
     "I think that would be a good idea."
