Summary: Someone gets inspired for a Halloween costume. The Beatles Files: "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" by Christina Shuy cshuy@netcom.com "Mom! Dad! Come quick! I got the perfect idea for a Halloween costume!" Fourteen year old Michelle Katherine Mulder said, running down the stairs of the Maryland home she resided in with her parents and younger brother. "Oh? What is it, Michelle? And there's no use calling for your father. He's out of town, remember?" Dana Scully (Mulder) answered, walking over to where her daughter was jumping up and down excitedly in the typical fashion of teenagers everywhere. It was Halloween and Michelle had been angsting over what she would wear for the night of fun and partying for over a week. "Oh, right... you've gotta see this!" "See what? Michelle?" Dana asked, though her daughter was already running around again. In reply, Michelle set a CD to play in the CD player, all the while, digging through the box she had also brought down with her. "Picture yourself in a boat on a river, With tangerine trees and marmalade skies Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly, A girl with kaleidoscope eyes. Cellophane flowers of yellow and green, Towering over your head. Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes, And she's gone." Michelle pulled out a headband with springs attached, only they'd had cellophane flowers of yellow and green attached, and the springs had green pipecleaners curled around them. Then, she added a pair of old eyeglass frames on with sunrays pasted to the outside. The next thing she pulled out of the box was a long caftan style dress done in blue with white cloud patterns on it and rhinestones decorating it as well. "Lucy in the sky with diamonds. Follow her down to a bridge by a fountain Where rocking horse people eat marshmallow pies, Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers, That grow so incredibly high. Newspaper taxis appear on the shore, Waiting to take you away. Climb in the back with your head in the clouds, And you're gone." Dana smiled as Michelle donned the dress and sparkled, though she was looking very much like the personage in the song come to life. "I can't seem to manage to get the 'kaleidoscope eyes' bit right, though, Mom... what would you suggest?" Michelle sounded as though the world were coming to an end and Dana bit back a smile, wondering if she ever sounded the way her daughter did. "You have your father's hazel eyes, which are close enough. I do like the costume. You look great." Dana smiled. "I don't even know what to do with my hair!" Michelle wailed. Dana studied her daughter's dark, curling hair which she usually wore back in either a bun or braid. "What about leaving it down? As I remember 'Yellow Submarine', the drawing had her hair down." Dana smiled. It was how she was wearing it right now. "Lucy in the sky with diamonds, Picture yourself on a train in a station, With plasticine porters with looking glass ties, Suddenly someone is there at the turnstile, The girl with the kaleidoscope eyes." "That's a common look for you, isn't it, 'chelle?" came a voice from behind her and she lept a foot, turning around at the same time to see her brother standing there. She stuck her tongue out at her brother for the comment. He gave her the ultra innocent grin which was already breaking hearts, and which no one ever believed. "And what are you supposed to be?" Michelle asked, giving him the same expression her mother often gave her father for outlandish ideas. Eleven year old David Maxwell Scully grinned. "Dad, of course." He was standing there in an old suit, and a tie which looked almost like the artist Jackson Pollock had painted it. He'd only recently cut his brown-red hair in almost the same style he'd seen in old pictures of his father, including an odd addition of a wedding band on his left ring finger. "David, do you have your father's permission to wear his suit?" Dana asked, picking up the sandwich she'd made for a bite. "Yeah, Mom. Dad gave it to me when he heard what I was intending to do with it. I got Grandma to hem up the cuffs." Michelle wrinkled her nose. "Where did you get your tie?" "Garage sale." "It looks it." "SO do most of Dad's." "So do most of my what, young man?" Fox Mulder walked in behind his children, carrying a suit carrier, and looking like a man who had gone too long without seeing his family. "Mulder!" Dana was immediately out of the chair and into his arms. "Hey, Scully... been helping the kids with-" Mulder's low murmur was interrupted by the presence of Dana's lips pressing against his. David and Michelle both laughed, though David was making a face, almost as though the display of affection by his parents was embarassing him. Michelle beamed. Their parents loved one another deeply, and it showed. Special Agent Mulder had been away at a profiling job for almost a week with fellow Agent Molly Richardson-Jones. Profiling always took a lot out of him and it showed. "Mom, Dad, can we go out now?" "Oh! Sure. Be careful, and be back before 11pm." Dana smiled, breaking the kiss momentarily. Michelle and David picked up their plastic jack-'o-lantern candy baskets and headed out the door. At the same time, their parents settled on the black leather sofa situated in the living room. "How was the job?" Dana asked, curling up with her husband. Mulder groaned. "Awful. Phoebe was there..." Dana nodded, and held him tightly, listening to his tale. -The End- "The Truth is Out There.
