The Beatles Files: "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" by Christina Shuy cshuy@netcom.com Dana Scully was in intense pain. Of course, having been in labour for the past day or so didn't help. "Breathe... that's it, Dana... it's almost over... okay." Mulder's voice soothed her a little as the contraction ended. "I don't remember Michelle being this painful to get out." she said tiredly. "Different children have different labour times." the nurse told her. "Fox, could you please put in "Abbey Road" and play "Maxwell's Silver Hammer"? I think that would help a little." "Sure... hang on a second." Letting go of his wife's sweat-damp hand, he rummaged through the CDs he had brought with them before he found what he was looking for and started the track on endless repeat. "Joan was quizzical, studied petaphysical Science in the home Late nights all alone with a test-tube Oh-oh-oh-oh... Maxwell Edison majoring in medicine Calls her on the phone "Can I take you out to the pictures Joan?" But as she's getting ready to go A knock comes on the door..." "Uh-oh... I think I'm going to have another contraction... and I do want to push..." Dana said, and Mulder took hold of her hand. "You're just about fully dialated, Dana... you can push at any time." the nurse answered. "Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer Came down upon her head Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer Made sure that she was dead" "Our child has an interesting sense of humour." Mulder said. "Must take after you, Mulder..." Dana gasped before she started to push in earnest. "Back in school again Maxwell plays the fool again Teacher gets annoyed Wishing to avoid an unpleasant scene She tells Max to stay when the class has gone away So he waits behind Writing 50 times "I must not be so-o-o-o..." But when she turns her back on the boy He creeps up from behind" "I think this is it!" the nurse said as Dana bore down and pushed with all her might. "Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer Came down upon her head Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer Made sure that she was dead P.C. Thirty-One said "we caught a dirty one" Maxwell stands alone Painting testimonial pictures oh-oh-oh-oh Rose and Valerie screaming from the gallery Say he must go free (Maxwell must go free) The judge does not agree and he tells them so-o-o-o But as the words are leaving his lips A noise comes from behind" "Okay, the baby's out. Now let me get the airway clear..." The nurse turned away to take care of things. "Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer Came down upon his head Bang, Bang, Maxwell's silver hammer Made sure that he was dead" With that, the song ended and was about to hit the repeat when Mulder reached over and stopped it. The newborn's cries clearly drowning out the music. "Congratulations, Fox and Dana. You are the proud parents of a healthy baby boy." the nurse told them and they smiled greatly. "What do you want to name him?" Mulder whispered into her ear. "David... Maxwell... Scully." Dana murmured sleepily. "You heard my wife." Mulder beamed. When Mulder looked back at his wife, she'd already fallen asleep. "WOuld you like to hold him?" the nurse asked. "Sure." Carefully, the newborn was placed in his father's arms. "Happy birthday, David." Fox Mulder's face was lit with a brilliant smile. "Hey, nice going, Dad!" said a familiar voice from the door. "Hiya, Molly..." Mulder smiled at his 'official' partner. "Here refreshing your memory before you have to go through it again?" Molly Richardson Jones was pregnant again. She and her husband Desmond were expecting their third child within the next three months. "Molly, Mulder... I have to talk to you." Desmond stuck his head in the door. When they both walked out of the room, leaving the door open so that Mulder could keep an eye on Dana, Desmond faced them. "Word just came down from the top. Skinner's taking a month bereavement leave. His wife, Sharon, just died. In childbirth." Abruptly, Mulder, who still had David in his arms, turned and went back to sit beside his wife. He had to tell her that one of their friends had just died, and he didn't want her to hear from anyone else. -the end- "The Truth is Out There.
