Summary: Mulder sings his wife and new son to sleep, at the same time Margaret Scully reaches out to Walter Skinner. The Beatles Files: "From Me To You" by Christina Shuy cshuy@netcom.com Walter Skinner stood in front of the nursery, his expression stoic. He never took death well, most especially when it seemed he had been helpless to do anything. At the moment, he was looking more at his own reflection in the glass than at the new lives that were in view. "Walter?" Margaret Scully's voice was behind him. He turned to look at her. "Hello, Margaret..." he said, tiredly, his voice sounding clearly with unshed tears. "Congratulations on the birth of Clare... though my condolences on Sharon's passing." Sharon had made it through the birth just long enough to name their daughter... and Walter had granted her the middle name of Elisabeth. But then, there was a seizure, and she'd slipped away. "I wonder if God's got a sense of humour... 'cause I'm not laughing if he thinks this is funny." "I'm sure He doesn't think this is funny..." "Shouldn't you be with your daughter? Or your granddaughter?" "She and Fox are doing fine, and Michelle is with her other grandmother at the moment. It was you I was more concerned about. I know what it is like to lose a spouse, and I knew you could use a friend." Dana Scully was still in the hospital after having given birth. The birth itself had gone normally, but the doctors wanted to test both her and the baby for any abnormalities since Dana had cancer, though it was in remission and had been for several years. Her husband had yet to leave her side, and it seemed their son didn't want to either. "David isn't sleeping... Geez, Mulder, he's taking exactly after you. That figures." Dana held him close, though he still was whining softly. "Hey! I sleep! Very well, as a matter of fact, thankyouverymuch. Of course, if you're not there..." "Ah-ha! So you admit it!" They grinned at each other. "I could try with him what I do with Michelle..." "I'd love to hear that... I could use the lullaby myself." Fox Mulder held his son in his arms while sitting on his wife's hospital bed and started to sing, softly. "If there's anything that you want, If there's anything I can do, Just call on me and I'll send it along With love from me to you. I've got everything that you want, Like a heart that is oh so true. Just call on me and I'll send it along With love from me to you." "I would like that very much, Margaret... Forgive me, but I'm really in no mood for conversation." Skinner's voice was strained. "That's okay." She continued to stand there, however, so he wouldn't have to be alone. 'Mulder's a wonderful father...' Dana thought as he continued to sing, softly, and as she remembered how he always sang their older child to sleep. Mulder had always been involved with the children, even starting to spoil them the moment they'd found out they were going to have Michelle nearly two years ago. "I got arms that long to hold you And keep you by my side. I got lips that long to kiss you And keep you satisfied, oooh. If there's anything that you want, If there's anything I can do, Just call on me and I'll send it along With love from me to you. From me, to you." Dana watched and listened as Mulder's low, soft voice worked magic and was gradually putting their days-old son to sleep. Walter Skinner watched as his daughter, Clare Elisabeth Skinner, slept on with the peace all newborns had. It was then he realised, as he studied the last, best thing Sharon had left with him, that their daughter - even at this early stage - looked exactly like her mother. "Just call on me and I'll send it along With love from me to you. I got arms that long to hold you And keep you by my side. I got lips that long to kiss you And keep you satisfied, oooh." As Mulder finished the song, he put the newborn back into the hospital bassenet and hit the non-emergency nurse-call button. Then, he settled into the chair beside Dana's bed and finished the song while she drifted off as well. The nurse arrived immediately and set off returning David to the nursery. "Walter, I just want you to know... if there is anything I can do for you, please let me know." Skinner said nothing, but nodded his affirmation. Mulder, in the meantime, started on the next verse of the song. "If there's anything that you want, If there's anything I can do, Just call on me and I'll send it along With love from me to you. To you, to you, to you." WHen he finished the song, Dana had fallen asleep. The nurses had brought in a roll-away bed for him to sleep on in their half of the private room. Lightly planting a kiss on his wife's lips, he turned off the light and curled up as close as he could get and held her hand as he dozed off. "Walter, come on. Visiting hours are over. You're going to spend the night over at my house where I am going to see that you get some food and some sleep. Clare is going to need her father soon." "Thank you, Margaret, you're very kind to do that." Walter Skinner and Margaret Scully left the hospital together. Skinner looked dead tired and infinitely sad.
