The Beatles Files: "The Word" by Christina Shuy cshuy@netcom.com The car drove along an empty road. It was late, but the roadside lights kept the place brightly lit. Occasionally, wildlife crossing signs popped up along the side of the road. "You know, Mulder, I'm glad we finished this case." Dana Scully's voice was tired, and, truth be told, she was as well. "Yeah. You and me both." Mulder, who was driving, fidgeted with the radio tuning until he hit upon a song which caused him to pull over to the side of the road. Due to the dim lighting in the car, Scully couldn't seen the smile on his face. He had been driving because the case they had just finished had been very draining on Scully, as well as on him. "Mulder... what are you doing?" Scully asked, as he got out of the car and walked over to her side, opening the door, even while leaving the radio playing. "Dance with me, Scully... We deserve a little fun, after all." Mulder flashed a tired smile. He pulled her into his arms and began to dance with her. Though she had her doubts, she still danced with him. "Say the word and you'll be free Say the word and be like me Say the word I'm thinking of Have you heard the word is love? It's so fine, It's sunshine It's the word, love In the beginning I misunderstood But now I've got it, the word is good" "Are you sure we should be doing this, Mulder?" Scully looked and sounded dubious. "Sure... why not? It's just a friendly dance along the side of an empty road... it's well lit, and I'll leave the headlights on... C'mon, Dana... it's just a song." Mulder smiled at his partner. At that, Dana began laughing and they two of them continued to dance in the road. "Spread the word and you'll be free Spread the word and be like be Spread the work I'm thinking of Have you heard the word is love? It's so fine, It's sunshine It's the word, love Every where I go I hear it said In the good and bad books that I have read" Ever since they'd admitted exactly how they felt for each other, most of their days felt and seemed brighter than before. True, there were still cases when they'd felt like doing nothing more than run screaming from the scene, and which set both of them into serious downward spirals, but overall, it was good. 'Love... it *is* good.' Dana Scully smiled to herself and looked up at her partner, realising he was thinking the same thing. They both leaned in close and shared whispered kisses on their cheeks. "Give the word a chance to say That the word is just the way It's the word I'm thinking of And the only word is love It's so fine, It's sunshine It's the word, love Now that I know what I feel must be right I'm here to show everybody the light" Mulder smiled into his partner's hair, even as they continued to dance together in the empty roadway. "You know, Scully, to quote Stevie Wonder, 'You are the Sunshine of my life'." Mulder flashed his brightest smile at her. "You know, Mulder, you should be glad Skinner or the Lone Gunmen aren't here to hear this..." she grinned. "Too corny?" He gave her a raised eyebrow expression. "Maybe..." He whirled her around and still kept her close to him. By the end of the move, both were giggling like children. "Say the word and you'll be free Say the word and be like me Say the word I'm thinking of Have you heard the word is love? It's so fine, It's sunshine It's the word, love" "'It's the word... love.'" Mulder repeated the last line softly while holding Scully close. "I love you too, Fox." she smiled. "Now let's get back on the road. We're running late. I don't know about you, but all I want to do is go home and fall asleep in my own bed. After a nice, hot shower, of course." Though she was tired, the smile still remained on her lips and in her eyes. Mulder smiled, dipped Scully, who yelped briefly, and then pulled her close to kiss her. "Your wish is my command... milady." His voice was low and teasing. They got back into the car and were back on their way. -The End...- "The Truth is Out There.
