emperors/kirin

The Emperor is the immortal leader of the kingdom [though they can die of illness or beheadding]. Each emperor is chosen by the Taiho [prime-minister, advisor] which is a kirin [a righteous, immortal beast of the heavens]. As long as the emperor is fair and does not subjugate the people, the emperor and kirin both flourish, as does the country. If an emperor acts out of heaven's will, however, their kirin contracts the Shitsudou illness. If the emperor does not change their ways, the kirin will die and the emperor soon follows. If the emperor changes their ways, the kirin recovers and all is well. As long as an emperor sits on their throne, natural disasters and youma decrease and the country prospers. The longer an emperor rules, the better off a country is. Simply put, if the emperor leaves/dies, the country basically goes to hell.
