kaikyaku/taika

Kaikyaku are people who are from Hourai [Japan] and are brought over to the other world by Shoku [Tsunami-like storms]. They are generally hated by the public and some emperors [such as Kou-sama] because the Shoku which bring them usually cause massive damage to coastal villages.

Taika are people who's raika [seeds] are awept away by Shoku and they end up being born to humans in Japan. Whenever they travel to their true homeland, their appearance changes into what they truly look like. Kou-sama seems to hate them as well. Damn, he's so cranky...

Nakajima Yoko - A red-haired Kaikyaku who is brought to the other world by Keiki. Mysteriously, her appearance changes when she arrives and she can also speak the strange foreign language that the natives speak. She has no desire to stay in that world and fights to stay alive so she can return to Japan. Little does she know that she is meant to serve a greater purpose to the world she is brought to. Hunted by the Emperor of Kou as the 'bringer of destruction" to their world. Starts out really whiny, turns ultra-depressive because of the monkey spirit which possesses her sword sheath, then kicks his ass. Really should get with Shoryu. He's beautiful...

Sugimoto Yuuka - Yoko's childhood friend and anti-social classmate. Brought to the other world by Keiki at Yoko's insistance. She is delusional and believes she is the "chosen one" and that Keiki was mistaken when he pledged allegiance to Yoko. Completely delusional bitch.

Asano Naoyuu - Yoko's childhood friend and classmate and Yuuka's boyfriend. Brought to the other world by Keiki at Yoko's insistance. He really has no idea what the hell is going on or where the hell he is going. Later falls off a cliff because he is an idiot. But he survives...unfortunately. Then he goes insane.

Ooki Suzu - A Kaikyaku from the Meiji period [1868 - 1912] who became a servant to a particularly mean-spirited sage, , so she could become immortal and speak the language. After serving the sage for 100 years, she ran away and with the aid of the Empress of Sai, escaped the country to find the Empress of Kei who could possibly send her back to Japan. On the way, she found a particularly cracked-out Asano and a small child who taught her not to pity herself because she wasn't the only one who had suffered. Then the boy was killed in Kei by Shoukou [a real bastard of a district chief] and Suzu blamed him and the Empress. She then set out to assasinate them both, but she joined a gang instead. A gang with a really hot senior member. Yum...

Komatsu Naotaka [Emperor Shoryu] - Shoryu is a taika who was the son of a feudal lord [a descendant of pirates no less!] 530 years prior to the main action of the show. After a bloody battle with their sworn enemy, his father was killed and he became the lord overnight. The entire town was re-located to an island where he met Enki, who happened to be among the survivors, who immediately recognised him as "the man who would destroy the country [En]" ::sniff:: poor Enki. Later, Shoryu nobly decided to sacrafice himself so his people could get away, but they came to his aid anyway and they all died. Enki, fortunately was able to save Shoryu and he bestowed upon him the rule of En and they went to the other world together where Shoryu told him that since the country was basically a wasteland they could "make it whatever they wanted." Then Enki cried ::tear::

Rokuta [Enki] - ::sniff:: oh god, this one gets me every time. I swear to god I cry every time I think about the whole Enki/Shoryu story cause it just breaks my damned heart. ::ahem:: Anyway, Rokuta was born in Kyoto and when he was ut a wee tyke [4 or 6], the nobles torched his village. As he and his family watched the village burn to the ground, he asked his father why the nobles would do such a thing if they were supposed to protect the people. No answer. A little while later, Rokuta's bastard father decided that it would be best if they left him in the woods to die. Unfortunately, little Rokuta heard this and decided that he would no longer be a burden to his parents or to anyone any more. ::sniff:: So the next day, his father took him into the woods, sat him down and told him not to move from that spot until he came back. Rokuta obviously knew better and obediently sat there until he was almost dead from starvation. Then his Nyouma found him and took him back "home" to Mt. Hou so he could be happy and grow up and mature as a Kirin and eventually choose the new Emperor of En. Wrong answer. After the sennin assigned to him, Shoushi, showed him their ruined country [thanks to the previous emperor] and told him her sad story, little Enki flipped his little shit and told her that he would never choose and emperor because he didn't want any more children to suffer the way she had. ::blubber:: When the time came to choose an emperor, Enki really flipped his shit, created a shoku and ended up back in Japan where he was rescued by Shoryu. with Shoryu and his rag-tag group of Japanese priates...heh...after saving Shoryu's ass he asked him if he wanted a country to rule over. Shoryu said yes even after Enki told him it was barren and poor, so Enki bowed before him and told him to accept the throne saying, "if you will bear the hopes of the people, then I will bear the weight of the country." ::WAAAIL! grabs a fist-full of Kleenex and blows:: My god. I think that is my favourite line in the whole damn show. It just breaks my heart. Shoryu accepts and they go to En together.........................500 years later, En is the most prosperous, happiest, most accepeting, peaceful countries in the world. Mission accomplished.

Takasato Kaname [Taiki - The Black Kirin] - Poor misunderstood bloke. His grandmother over in Japan hates him because he swatted at her hand after she touched his forehead once. That's what happens when you fuck with a Kirin's horn, you bitch! Ever since his raika went missing during a shoku, his crazy-obssessed Nyouma [Sanshi] and the rest of the mountain had been searching for him. Then Renrin opened up a little portal and Sanshi yanked him the hell out of an enclosed yard. Unfortunately, when they got to him, Taiki was already 10 years old and everyone was in doubt as to whether he would be able to transform into his beast form or not. With a little help from a really bitter pre-Yoko, pre-my empress is insane and wants to nail me Keiki, he was able to overcome his little problem and a beautiful friendship blossomed [although I'm sure at some point Keiki really regretted that because his new kinder nature is exactly what made the empress fall for him in the first place]. Then Taiki chose an emperor. Quite possibly the wrong emperor. Bad move, kid. It only took a really dick-ish Shoyru [and a really terrifying performance that made me hit near-by friends] to make sure. Then somehow or another he ended up back in Japan after only a year. Then his emperor dissapeared. Then Tai went to hell. But that's a different story. Then Sugimoto showed up and we all thought that Kaname's brother was gonna push her in front of the train out of jealousy. Too bad he didn't...
