SDA Claim:  That Ellen Gould White is the Spirit of Prophecy
and that she is the final word on interpreting Scripture.

Many outside the SDA Church do not know that Adventists claim to have a last-day prophet/messenger from God.  So let's prove this is what Adventists claim, from their own words.
The first quote is from their "27 Fundamental Beliefs of Seventh-day Adventists":

17. The Gift of Prophecy: One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is prophecy. This gift is an identifying mark of the remnant church and was manifested in the ministry of Ellen Gould White. As the Lord's messenger, her writings are a continuing and authoritative source of truth which provide for the church comfort, guidance, instruction, and correction.

And let's hear from Ellen Gould White herself on how to study the Bible:

"We are not to receive the words of those who come with a message that contradicts the special points of our faith.  They gather together a mass of Scripture, and pile it as proof around their asserted theories.  This has been done over and over again during the past fifty years.  And while the Scriptures are God's Word, and are to be respected, the application of them, if such application moves one pillar of the foundation that God has sustained these fifty years, is a great mistake.  He who makes such an application knows not the wonderful demonstration of the Holy Spirit that gave Power and force to the past messages that have come to the people of God." (ELLEN GOULD WHITE, Call to the watchman, page 20, 1910 and again repeated in Selected Messages, book 1, page 161)

Clearly the SDA Church claims that Ellen Gould White claims to speak for God as an "authoritative source of truth", and she also said that we are not to listen to the Bible, when the Bible contradicts what she has said to do, because the Bible is a "mistake" if the Bible leads in another direction from what she wants to do.

Let's hear again from the Adventist messenger, called
"The Spirit of Prophecy, Ellen Gould White:

"Others have called me a prophetess, but I have never assumed that title.  I have not felt that it was my duty thus to designate myself. ....MY WORK INCLUDES MUCH MORE THAN THIS NAME SIGNIFIES.  I regard myself as a messenger, entrusted by the Lord with messages for His people....MY COMMISSION EMBRACES THE WORK OF A PROPHET, BUT IT DOES NOT END THERE.  IT EMBRACES MUCH MORE THAN THE MINDS OF THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN SOWING SEEDS OF UNBELIEF CAN COMPREHEND.
(Ellen Gould White,  Selected Messages, Vol. 1, p. 36.)

"In ancient time God spoke to men by the mouth of prophets and apostles.  In these days He speaks to them by the testimonies of His spirit (spirit of prophecy).  There never was a time when God instructed His people more earnestly then He instructs them now concerning His will and the course that He would have them pursue.  But will they profit by His teachings?  Will they receive His reproofs and heed His warnings?  God will accept no partial obedience; He will sanction no compromise with self."
(Ellen Gould White,  Testimonies, Vol. 4, pp. 147-148)

Compare this with the Bible:

Hebrews 1:1-3  "In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, BUT IN THESE LAST DAYS HE HAS SPOKEN TO US BY HIS SON, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven."

Back to the authoritative comments from Ellen Gould White:

"When men venture to criticize the Word of God, they venture on sacred, holy ground, and had better fear and tremble and hide their wisdom as foolishness.  God sets no man to pronounce judgment on His word, selecting some things as inspired and discrediting others as uninspired.  The testimonies have been treated in the same way; but God is not in this.               (Ellen Gould White, Selected Messages, Vol. 1, p. 23.)

Bear in mind that every time Mrs. White uses the word "testimonies" she is speaking of her own writings.  She claimed that all she said in her writings came from God, and it was necessary to hear and obey her as much as the Bible.

"If you seek to turn aside the counsel of God to suit yourselves, if you lessen the confidence of God's people in the testimonies He has sent them, you are rebelling against God as certainly as were Korah, Dathan, and Abiram."    (Ellen Gould White, Testimonies, Vol. 5, p. 66.)

"God is either teaching His church, reproving their wrongs and strengthening their faith, or He is not.  This work is of God, or it is not.  God does nothing in partnership with Satan.
My work for the past thirty years bears the stamp of God or the stamp of the enemy.  There is no halfway work in the matter.  The Testimonies are of the Spirit of God, or of the devil.  In arraying yourself against the servants of God you are doing a work either for God or for the devil." (Ellen Gould White, Testimonies, Vol. 4, p. 230.)

"Before I stand on my feet, I have no thought of speaking as plainly as I do.  But the Spirit of God rests upon me with power, and I cannot but speak the words given me.  I dare not withhold one word of the testimony... I speak the words given me by a power higher than human power, and I cannot, if I would, recall one sentence."
(Ellen Gould White Diary, January 10, 1890) MS 22, 1890, White Estate)

Adventists have always insisted publicly that they did not consider EGW equal to the Bible.  As you will see in the next quotation, this is true - they do not consider her equal - they consider her BETTER than the Bible:

"As Seventh-day Adventists we are uniquely fortunate in approaching this question.  We are not left to find our way, drawing conclusions only from writings penned 19 centuries ago (the Bible), which have come down to us through varied transcriptions and translations.
Concerning inspiration, with us it is an almost contemporary matter, for we have a prophet in our midst... What is more, rather than having in our possession only relatively short documents or a handful of letters, as is the case with the extant records of the Bible prophets, we have the full range of Ellen G. White writings penned through a period of 70 years, embodying her published books, her 4,600 periodical articles and her manuscripts, letters, and diaries.  We have also the testimonies of her contemporaries - eyewitness accounts of those who lived and worked closely with her.  Both she and they discussed many points touching on the visions and on the manner in which the light was imparted to her, and how she, in turn, conveyed the messages to those for whom they were intended.  In other words, the eyewitnesses discussed the operation of inspiration... Further, she wrote in a modern language, so a large number of people today can study her writings in the original language, without needing to depend on a translation.  Rarely, too, is it necessary to depend upon a transcription."
Inspiration and the Ellen G. White Writings, reprint, p. 3.

So, it has become very clear, that Seventh-day Adventists claim to be above the Bible with their own prophet/messenger named Ellen Gould White. Ellen Gould White is considered to be the infallible interpreter of Scripture, and is the final word on everything.

How does one test a prophet?
The Bible gives us some tests:

1: Prophecies must be fulfilled

Deut. 18:22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the Lord, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously; thou shalt not be afraid of him. KJV

In 1856 she addressed a group of some 4000 people,
and made this remarkable statement:

"I was shown the company present at the Conference, Said the angel: "Some food for worms, some subjects of the seven last plagues, some will be alive and remain upon the earth to be translated at the coming of Jesus."--(Ellen Gould White, 1T 131, 132, 1856).

She was given this information from an Angel, and she stated that some people in the room would still be alive at the return of Jesus.  This would make those people over 140 years old now.  We can see this prophecy fails totally. She is on record as having made dozens and dozens of failed prophecies and over 50 major errors about the Bible,

2: Cannot steal writings from others

I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied. ... Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that steal my words every one from his neighbour. Jer. 23:25,30

In recent years, the facts have come to light that the works of Ellen Gould White, the author, are really the efforts of Ellen Gould White, the thief.  Somewhere between 30% to upwards of 90% (maybe even higher) of all her writings are stolen from other authors.

The following is a statement from the SDA Church researcher, Dr. Veltman.  Dr Veltman was given the task to look into Ellen Gould White's use of other's materials without giving credit (plagiarism).

Dr. Veltman noted:
"Implicitly or explicitly, Ellen White and others speaking on her behalf did not admit to and even denied literary dependency on her part... I must admit at the start that in my judgment this is the most serious problem to be faced in connection with Ellen White's literary dependency. It strikes at the heart of her honesty, her integrity, and therefore her trustworthiness." (Ministry, Dec. 1990, p. 11,14)

Dr. Don McAdams, an SDA scholar, stated at a 1980 Church conference, called "the Glendale meeting" (a private meeting of church officials for the purpose of addressing the thefts by Ellen Gould White, [to clean up the matter from public view]):  "If every paragraph in the book
Great Controversy, written by Ellen White, was properly footnoted, then every paragraph would have to be footnoted."

3: A Prophet will acknowledge Paul's writings as God's Commandments

1 Cor. 14:37  If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

Ellen Gould White did not do what is about to be
commanded by Paul in his writings in the Bible:

1 Cor. 14:34,35  Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak...for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. KJV

1 Tim. 2:11,12  Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. KJV

Ellen Gould White violated many commands of Paul, from what is clean food for Christians, to marriage, but for now, we have clearly shown that Ellen Gould White is a false prophet.
