The Arecibo Observatory has also been a must-see
attraction for island visitor. It is certainly an impressive site.
The facility is set in the rugged karst terrain of northcentral
Puerto Rico, a lush disorder of mounded hills, deep sinkholes while,
hundreds of feet above, a huge triangular platform and geodesic dome
hang suspendede by cables connected to three towers. The dish receives
radio waves from across the universe and reflects them into the dome and
special feed antennas attached to the platform. The futuristic apperance
of the telescope constrast dramatically with the prehistoric look
of the landscape. Unfortunaly, the lack of a proper visitor center
(following a two-hour drive from San Juan) disappointed many visitors,
who were unable to get an in-depth idea of what was happening at the site.
That has changed.
