More than 300 miles of coastline rim Puerto Rico,
and two inhabited islands and several smaller uninhabited one lies offshore. In some
places, the coastline is a long curving arc of pale sand shaded by coconut palms and
bordered by calm waters; in other place, a small pocket of beach wedged between
headlands; in yet others, a sheer cliff plunging into rough waters.
The long streches of beach off the tourism
districts of Condado, Ocean Park and Isla Verde are ideal for bathers, joggers, and
weekend sun worshippers. Some of the loveliest beaches rim Puerto Rico's west coast,
where the sunsets are romantically Caribbean. Historic century-old lighthouses
scattered around Puerto Rico mark some photogenic coastal streches, and the major
resorts pamper their guests at secluded beaches. For families, goverment-run
Balnearios or public beaches offer safe swimming at pintoresque coastal
sites, with the added bonuses of parking, shower and locker facilities.
