El Yunque

The 28,000-acre Caribbean National Forest is the largest tract of forest land in Puerto Rico and the only tropical forest in the U.S. National Forest System. It is generally referred to as El Yunque for a well known peak. Cool temperatures, over 100 billion gallons of annual rainfall, and 240 tree species, some found nowhere else in the world, characterize El Yunque. Majestic tabonuco trees predominate on lower slopes while stunted dwarf huddles on the highest peaks. El Yunque is also home to 50 species of native orchids, over 150 types of ferns, and a profusion of air plants. Anole lizards, tree frogs and over 50 birds species, including the endagered Puerto Rican parrot, make their homes here. The recreation area has observations towers, picnics sites, and an excellent network of trails. Certain areas are still closed due to a recent hurricane. At the northern boundary, the dramatic El Portal Tropical Forest Center explains the importance of this and other tropical forests through interesting bilinguals displays, exhibits, a short film, and a gift shop.
