XFU Faculty Spotlight
By Amy Lang

Our XFU faculty member I will profile this issue is Reade, our IRC Liaison.

I have only known Reade since I began XFU in May 1998. Since then, she has proven to be an endless source of amusement and help to me. I am lucky to serve as Co-Dean with her for the Villain Studies College.

Reade lives in Canada, home of Hockey Fanatics, Snow (no, not the composer! the real stuff) and the former studio of 1013 Productions. When she is not lurking in the XFU IRC room, Reade is busy passing on all her hard-earned X-Files knowledge on to her progeny, her 5-year-old son.

Reade took a few minutes from slapping her fellow OBSSE members with trouts to answer a few questions:

Q. What is the first thing you notice when you meet a new person?

A. Well, after I discern that they are human and not a morphing clone or a bug in people clothes....
Actually, I first notice whether that person can look me in the eye. That and whether they laugh at my jokes...

Q. Which CD/tape do you find yourself listening to most lately? Why?

A. Great Big Sea-Up (a Celtic rock band) Why? Because it is really fast music and it helps me type faster..kaldktuaissdfeek...although I don't think it improves my accuracy

Q. Which CD/tape are you embarassed to admit you listen to?

A. Big Willie Style-Will Smith...because the 10-year-old girls are buying it too. But it's the Man in Black (purrrrrrrrrrrrr), he can neuralize me any day.

Q. What is your favorite X-Files episode and why?

A. Oh man....there are so many. How about my favourite 6? That would be as far as I could narrow it down. Pusher ('cause of well....Robert and the kick ass Scully moments), Small Potatoes ('cause I like the way DD played Faux Mulder), Jose Chung's "From Outer Space" ('cause it was really funny and I like the girly scream...and it was so quotable), Bad Blood ('cause it was really funny and I liked the way it showed both Mulder and Scully's outlook on a case), Memento Mori ('cause GA was incredible in it) and Never Again (it was the best sex someone never had..and it has inspired me to want to get a tattoo....)

Q. What turned you into an X-Phile?

A. Likely my reoccurring dreams about Mulder in a open white shirt...but let's not get into that....
Actually X-Files is the kind of show that I always watch. I was into Twilight Zone and Twin Peaks (DD in a dress) and later on Outer Limits. In fact I like almost every sci/fi/mysterous/unexplained kinda show that has been on the air...even the bad ones. It's just nice that this time there is a really good one to like.

Q. Do you believe you should wear white shoes after Labor Day?

A. Listen...if I don't have to put on my snow boots after Labour Day I am one happy Canadian chick. Ok...how about...I think the fashion industry has perpetuated enough lies and cruel jokes upon we women (remember who invented bell bottoms and neon colours...and remember who brought them back again!) It's time we united and fought back. Take back our footwear, ladies...let's wear it whenever the hell we please.

Q. What is your favorite Web page to visit online (other than XFU)?

A. That's a tie...The Temple of Modell and the OBSSE. I might as well have these sites locked into the 'puter, 'cause I am there a lot....

Q. If you weren't doing what you are doing now (and what are you doing now?) what would your dream job be?

A. Well...right now I am a preschool teacher which is an excellent job, that I truly love. If I could be anything though I would be...1) a forensic pathologist/anthropologist or 2) a palentologist. Seriously.

Q. Name your absolute favorite meal.

A. My mom's sweet and sour meatballs with scalloped potatoes. Actually anything that I don't have to cook...

Q. Who was the first person you ever had a crush on, and what was that person like?

A. The first guy I had a crush on in real life was a musician, a drummer. He was very tall, with dark hair. And he was into heavy metal. Wore an earring. Thought he was cool. He wasn't.
The first celebrity I had a crush on...although you didn't ask, was a tie between Sean Cassidy and the Fonz...I don't remember who came first.

Department Overviews: College of Theology | School of Fanfic-General Studies | College of Physics | College of Dana Scully |

College of Theology

The College of Theology focuses on all things religious within the X-Files, be it Scully's Catholicism, Mulder's atheism/agnosticism, the appearance of religion through minor characters and plot devices, and the use of mythology and legend within storylines. These issues have been raised in episodes from "Miracle Man" to "The Blessing Way" to "Kaddish", all showing different ways in which religious beliefs can be linked to paranormal/supernatural events. Because the topics addressed within the show are so broad, the College itself attempts to keep the areas of study equally broad. We have two departments: the Dept. of Paranormal Judaica, which has already been profiled, and the Dept. of Christian Imagery. The College itself is in no way limited to these two areas--all other courses of study go through me, the Dean of the College. All ideas and courses of study are welcome!!

School of Fanfic-General Studies

We have five departments within the School of Fanfic-General Studies. There is, of course , a Mulder/Scully Romance Department, headed by KudzuWolf ([email protected]). This department is for fiction works in which MSR is the primary focus of the story. Secondly, we have the Department of Nonfiction Fanfiction, headed by Jaina Solo ([email protected]), which concentrates on nonfiction works *about* any aspect of fanfiction. Next, there is the Department of Slash Fiction, which is currently sans department head (so, de facto, I [Birgit Mueller ([email protected])] am the faculty member for any slash works we might get). Fourth, we have the brand new Department of Minor Mysteries, headed by Gillian Turner ([email protected]) , which seeks creative explanations to such minor enigmas as why Mulder has no bed, why he has a thing for sunflower seeds and why Skinner was assigned to the X-Files. And finally, we have the Department of General Fanfic, headed by me. As the name implies, the general stories and/or stories not falling under any other departments fall here. The School of Fanfic-General Studies has a guidelines page at

http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Chamber/5368/xfu_fgs.html.
And second, I am also the librarian for the XFU Chris Carter Library of Internet Fanfiction Classics, located at

http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Chamber/5368/xfu_library_main.html.

College of Physics

Suspend your disbelief and enjoy the show, but if there's some bit of physics still nagging you days later, come visit the College of Physics. Here we enjoy evaluating episodes in the context of present scientific knowledge and extrapolating from present scientific knowledge to explain the physics in episodes of The X-Files. Visit us at:

College of Dana Scully: All (or Most) Departments

Hello from all of us at the College of Dana Scully! (We're in those more modern-looking buildings right next to the Oxfordian spires of our brother college - the short, sexy edifices with the impressive laboratories and autopsy bays.) In our humble opinion, Dana Katherine Scully is, frankly, an FBI Goddess whose sharp mind, steady aim and thirst for justice entitle her to global worship! But don't just take our word for it:

If you like and admire Dana Scully and would like to learn more about her or help educate your fellow Philes, you should head over to our department page at http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Hollow/1087. There you'll find links to other Scully Web sites, Scullycentric episode reviews, Scully Quotes, and the CofDS Thesis Archive. You can also meet us, the faculty, or subscribe to our mailing list to make sure you'll stay informed about CofDS classes and events. And be sure to drop a note to Lauda, our Dean, in recognition of all her work on our page :) [email protected].

What might you study at the College of Dana Scully? Options abound:

Look for individual department guidelines in the Course Catalog! And have a Scullyrific day!

Reach For the Stars
by Neicee

Note: I get information from various sources, the Net, mags, people affiliated with the show, etc. Please don't sue me and be aware that dates and information change daily. The purpose of this column is not so much gossip, but information. There's a lot of X-Files stuff out here and this will be a condensed version of all that good stuff. Now, I may miss something and if I do please e-mail me and I will give you credit in the next issue. Absolutely no bashing of anyone affiliated with the show, their spouses, children, grandmothers, cousins, hairdressers . . . well, you get the picture. This is gonna be short because most people, including me, are going on a much-needed vacation from reality. What am I gonna do without my X-Files!?! Oh well, I'll read Antibodies on the way there. Enough said . . . btw, no Philes were harmed while gathering this information.

I recently found out that Gillian Anderson will be at the Electronic Expo in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 30 (the expo is May 28-30) at the World Congress Center. It's trade only and costs $75 to get in. Supposedly, Gillian will be promoting the new X-Files Game (you know the one with all the gadgets and videos). It's supposed to be awesome and is already out in Europe!

The new poster (the regular one) is out. Ordering, on the other hand is a different story. Some sites have the poster, others are still waiting for it and still others doubt they'll even get it. This is a gonna be a hard find, as hard as the last 3 but I managed to get my hands on a copy of all 3, so I'll let you know.

As far as TV sightings go, here is a list, but remember dates change so check your local listings:

The VCRs will be working overtime tonight, so make sure it's in good working order and you have enough tape (from experience) to get the whole episode.
There are too many mags to list. The X-Files seem to be on/in everything, but here are a few:

Details, Biography, Premiere (small article), Entertainment Weekly (small article), Vanity Fair, a few satellite schedules and several science fiction magazines (I'll provide names later). You can go broke buying all this stuff!
Also, for all you people (me included) out there that don't get FX, I just got an e-mail from DirectTV that there will be an announcement later this year about FX, so keep calling DirectTV and requesting FX! Maybe we'll get it sooner, rather than later!

Well, be kind, it's my first article here at XFU and I'll taylor my updates as needed. If there's something that you're looking for, merchandise, dates, interviews, chats, let me know (via private e-mail) and I'll let you know what I find.

Episode Reviews by Cheryl Duckworth

"Foilie a Deux" and "The End"

"Foilie a Deux" written by Vince "The Man" Gilligan

May 11, 1998
You're saying "I" a lot. I heard "we."
~Dana Scully

Obviously, this episode had a lot to say about Mulder and Scully's relationship. In another testimony for Gilligan's skill, Scully telling Mulder not to assume Skinner meant "I" instead of "we" (guess which was my favorite line?) could have another layer in the context of the whole episode: she's telling him he dosen't have to face this madness alone. Not that he gets that. Again, "madness by two" nails them, as did Anderson and Duchovny's performance. They interacted with the familiarity we might expect from partners who have been together for five years nearly non-stop. Mulder knows when Scully is hedging as he prods, "More or less," when she explains her autopsy revealed the body had been dead longer than they presumed. And she seems to know he's not meaning to be rude when he leaves her in D.C. and heads off alone (otherwise I like to think she'd call him on it). Perhaps this explains why he signed her up for the exam she said she wasn't going to do; he knows she'll at least consider it (even if he did ask her later if she had done it -- I was glad he hadn't assumed). And I don't think I have ever heard Mulder so clearly and desperately explain his love for and need for Scully's faith in him. "You have to believe me. No one else on this whole damn planet ever has or ever will." Scully's reaction, "It's not that simple" affected me and troubled me. Again, what is she not saying? What is going on inside her because of his declaration? She seemed almost resigned more than pleased with the weight of it on her and saddened for both of them. I found this scene beautiful and sad and evocative all at once. Dare I say they are together for better or for worse? All in all, a thoughtful, well-crafted, strongly-acted episode that explored interesting ideas and a fascinating relationship that was still somehow not up to Uberstandards. I'll give it 9 tic tacs out of ten.

A Review of "The End" 5/18/98

"What do you hope to find? I mean, in the end?"
A.D Skinner

This was a very solid episode in many ways that has me excited to see the movie, not worried about it. It handled Scully's jealousy and Diana's sudden appearence such that we learn some new things about Scully's strength and the strength of her bond with Mulder. The story was rather original and exciting, even if the script was clumsy in parts. I award it 9 tic tacs out of ten, with Carter's choice of flavor for that final tragic ending.

Various Reviews
"Godzilla"
WARNING:

MAJOR SPOLIERS

OK, you were warned. Well, it's no "Independence Day", that's for sure. But then, no other movie ever will be "ID4." But that's the obstacle Emmerich & Devlin will face from now on. The team behind one of the most moving films ever made in color are behind the latest incarnation of "Godzilla". It's not the thrill ride I was expecting, but it's action sequences had top-notch effects. Not nearly as stomp-the -humans packed as either of the "Jurassic Park" films, Godzilla becomes sympathetic, especially when he (she? it?) looks down upon the charred bodies of his (her? its?) offspring. Technically, Godzy is a he that reproduces asexually and, in a move instantly recognizable by any Trekker worth having the name, all 'Zillas are born pregnant. I found the supporting cast of Hank Azaria (voice of Apu and Moe and others on "The Simpsons" and Mr. Helen Hunt to boot) and the woman who plays his wife, sorry I can't find her name, to be more engaging than any of the main characters. And Jean Reno is the only Frenchman I'll probably ever like. Maria Pitillo comes across as whiny. Matthew Broderick comes across as perennialy overwhelmed. I mean, use better than a disposable camera to take pics of the G- creature! Vicki Lewis from "NewsRadio" comes across as competent but horny, not that there's anything wrong with that. Harry Shearer is so annoying you wish for a T-Rex to eat him! Everybody else just comes across as potential Godzy-fodder. So what am I saying? "Godzilla" is good, but be sure to lower your expectations from "ID4" level before entering the theater.

Great first issue! If you need help on it I would love to help. Um, I like drawing and doing cartoons and stuff, anyhoo, keep up the good work!

The Editor Responds-

Thanks Carly. We could always use clever artwork for TMB. Please send any "X"-related items you might have.

"The Magic Bullet" is concocted, assembled and autopsied in the basement of the Student Center on the XFU campus.

"The Magic Bullet" is in no way endorsed, associated with or responsible for the real "The Magic Bullet", 1013 Productions or the FOX network. The X Files University is not an accredited school. "Godzilla" did NOT gross more in its opening weekend than "The Lost World."

Special note from the editor:
When I went to add on to this issue on May 23, I found the following annoying ad at the top of the page. Now I understand why the companies offering free Web space do this. But, as I have read nothing that says where the ad is to be, I moved it down here to the very bottom where it won't intertupt your reading pleasure.
