THINGS THAT MOVE IN THE NIGHT
Have you ever had the experience of seeing motion from the corner of your eye, and as you turn around there is nothing there? Did you ever see a rocking chair rock with no one in it? How about items that move from one place to another and you know you didn't move them and no one will admit to it. On this page we will take a look at these and other phenomena that may well be the work of a ghost or other spirit.
Now we shall return to the log house I was raised in and resume the telling of my childhood eerie experiences.
THE RATTLING DOORKNOB
I was in the first grade at the time of the doorknob.
As I recall it was a late fall evening and my dad,uncle and grandpa had gone racoon hunting night hunting as we always called it. We didn't have electric as yet so mom and I were setting in the living room with the kerosine lamps lit and listening to the old battery powered radio. We were quite happy and relaxed talking the way a mother and her young son will talk. The hunters had been gone for maybe a half hour. With no warning at all the door knob to the front door turned at first slowly then very rapidly with a rattling sound and no knocks and no footsteps on our squeeky porch. The door was locked and mom said who is there there was no answer just more violent rattling of the knob. By now we were terrified after a minute of so it stopped just as it started still no footsteps heard mom took a flashlight and looked out the front window no one was there. To this day we have never had a good explanation for this event.
The Presence
All throughout my childhood there would be times that I would feel the presence of someone behind me but no one was there.I will never forget the night that I was in my room playing a game. I am an only child so I had to learn to play games by myself. It was late or should I say eauly morning around 2 am: I was in my mid teens at the time. I had felt someone in the house all night but only myself my dad and mom were there, still I would hear someone walking in the kitchen and the clicking of the water dipper. This happened frequently that nihgt, With a start I heard someone walking in the living room,when I looked out my door I was terrified at what I saw. There going across the living room floor was my mothers house slippers but she wasnt in them they walked across the room and back to the couch.I was almost overcome with fear as this transpired. I had never actually seen anything move without a way for it to move before in my life. We lived on a farm and had no running water so instead of goint to an outside toilet in the night we had what is termed a slop jar(old time pot). Shortly after I had watched the shoes walking across the floor I again heard footsteps walking in the living room and this time what I saw was too much for before my eyes the old pot raised in the air to the level a mon would hold it and just hung there for a minute or so then lowered its self back to the floor slowly and the lid replaced its self to its positon on top the slop jar. I didn't tell any one about this for a long time because I was sure they would deem me crazy. A few months went by and I told my mother what I had saw, all she said was are you sure you weren't dreaming. I told her that there was no way could it have been a dram as I was wide awake playing solitar, and that is when she told me her story.
MOMS STORY
My mother was raised in the same old log hous so it should be no surprise that she had seen something also.
She told me that always as far back as she could remember there were times she felt creepy, in the house and in the nights there were times she would see a very big dark human like form standing in the same doorway I was seeing it in. She further told me that when they cleaned out the attic there were found parts of a quigi board, which is an object of the occult used to contact familiar spirits. I to this day believe that the dark form was a familiar which I will tell more about in a later page. mom also told me of the same sounds I was hearing footsteps on the stairway people walking around in the night when no one was up. So it would appear that the house was always haunted.
I do not say that everything that happened was a familiar for it was not the moving of objects and the footsteps were likely ghosts and the ones that moved things poltergeist activity. There are several types of hauntings ranging from simple knocking to the moving of objects and apperations then there are the demon spirits which are not to be desired at all.
