Two ghosts are inhabiting the students and teachers at the school reenacting their death. It is up to buffy to discover who they are, the circumstances, and why this is all happening now. It turns out they are the souls of a student and teacher who had an affair in the 1950's and died in a murder/suicide in the school. Strange instances such as arms popping out of lockers and grabbing people and snakes that attack and then disappear seem connected. Buffy becomes possessed by the spirit of James the young man and Angel possessed by the young woman Grace. The whole thing seems to be orchestrated by Grace so James' soul can forgive itself and be freed. While inside  Buffy and Angel they work things out, and when Angel and Bufy regain control they find themselves kissing.  Buff and Angel then freak out and run their separate ways.
