The Borg are a cybernetic species, and whilst being Humanoid in appearance
their bodies are implanted with large amounts of artificial mechanical
enhancements which allow the to function as part of the Borg collective
consciousness.
The Borg have one goal - the assimilation of culture and technology - and
this goal is striven for by one mind, making it all the more dangerous.
The Borg's collective culture is organized around a hive like hierarchy
which stems from the Borg 'Queen' who operates like a regulator for the
trillions upon trillions of drones, bringing clarity of purpose and order
to form one voice. The Borg Queen embodies the collective, and it may be
prudent to assume that without the Queen the Borg would cease to function
as a whole and their culture would disintegrate - but that is not so. The
Queen exists within the collective's subspace mind, her physical form is
only a means of communication which other beings - such as Lieutenant Commander
Data and Captain Jean-Luc Picard - can more easily relate to whilst in
contact. This form is completely artificial, the organic tissue is mrerly
engineered over a endoskeletal frame. It has only been reported twice and
twice it has been destroyed, but her presence remains and the Borg go on.
The Borg have no mercy, no emotions, they exist on one premise - that they
will eventually assimilate everything. They do have a certain amount of
reason, and have been known to negotiate when it was to their benefit,
they are also, however, deceitful and arrogant and any concessions they
make are quickly forgotten when they no longer serve the Borg's purpose.
The Collective is formed by the minds which it encompasses, these minds
interact over a sophisticated subspace network, functioning co-operatively
to achieve the continuous betterment of the species with maximum efficiency.
Borg society thus consists entirely of this virtual interaction within
subspace. |
