The novels of Robert W. Chambers made the best sellers list a number of times
between 1900 and 1910* but did not make the list in the 20's and
30's. RWC's main market was the magazine. Most of his books came out
in serial and already had made him his money before they even
saw hardback. It is strange that he also made the best sellers list with
his novels since those that wanted could read his stories in the magazines.
The Fighting Chance deals with alcoholism and may have been a gift item
used to provoke feelings of guilt or hope. It is still the easiest to find and the
hardest to read. I was at a used book store on this last Oct. 31 (1997) and they
had 12 or 15 copies.
