The HOUSTON AREA WOMEN�S CENTER (HAWC) is a non-profit, United Way
agency that is celebrating its 20th year serving Houston. We provide a wide range of
services to the community, including counseling and a shelter for battered women and their
children, a hotline offering counseling and referral services for abused women, a rape crisis
hotline, education programs, and the Second-to-None Resale shop.

The Stichting Vrouwen tegen Mishandeling provides information, promotes
awareness and gives instruction about violence directed against women. The
Stichting Vrouwen tegen Mishandeling also devotes attention to violence directed
against children.
The Foundation approaches the abused women themselves for information and
reference; it approaches women and women's organizations for training,
co-operation and information; it approaches services concerned with abused
women for information, training, co-operation and reference; it approaches
shelters, homes and services providing assistance (residential and ambulant) for
co-operation, information and training, and it approaches students and pupils for
documentation and courses.
Finally, the Foundation addresses the government by collecting the experiences of
abused women and formulating recommendations in the light of the social and
legal situation of these women.

In the crisis center where I work, when we finally started asking the right questions to women who
were psychologically or physically abused, we learned that these women were also sexually assaulted
in a variety of ways. For example, abusive men routinely sexually assault their partners with varying
levels of violence during, or often after, a physical assault. Some abusive men make it obvious that
they are having other sexual affairs, they refuse to let women use birth control or force them to
participate in sex with another person or persons, or in sexual acts that she finds painful or degrading.
