Many Wiccan/Pagan Sites have already been banned because of this misconception of what We are all about. What about costomer's that are Wiccan/Pagan? Future costomer's? They are showing great disregard and disrespect for the comunnity at large not only to those of us who are the targets but also to those who have worked hard to disarm Prejudice in the many years before. Where will this lead us; perhaps to a future where everything that we do will be potentialy harmfull in the eye of the intolerant...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- After several hours of debate and public comment, a constitutional amendment on school prayer cleared the House Judiciary Committee by a 16-11 vote Wednesday.

The committee's Republicans outvoted Democrats to send the proposal to the full House, where it must win votes of two-thirds of members present to pass. Sponsors said no date has been set for floor action.

To change the Constitution, the Senate also would have to approve the amendment by a two-thirds vote, then 34 states would have to ratify it.

Supporters, which include the conservative Christian Coalition, said the proposed amendment is needed to reverse years of court rulings they contend have kept schoolchildren from participating in prayer at school.

Opponents predict the measure won't even make it out of Congress.

``The religious right may have steered this constitutional garbage scow through the Judiciary Committee, but I'm confident there's an iceberg looming on the House floor,'' said Barry Lynn of the liberal Americans United for the Separation of Church and State.

The proposed amendment states:

``To secure the people's right to acknowledge God according to the dictates of conscience, neither the United States nor any state shall establish any official religion, but the people's right to pray and to recognize their religious beliefs, heritage or traditions on public property, including schools, shall not be infringed. The government shall not require any person to join in prayer or other religious activity, prescribe school prayers, discriminate against religion, or deny equal access to a benefit on account of religion.''

Opponents told the committee the First Amendment already protects religious liberty, and bad constitutional rulings should be corrected in the courts through the appeal process. They contended some prayers allowed by the amendment could violate the rights of children who choose not to participate.-Copyright 1998 The New York Times Company
