Up in flames

(Day 1, 14:00pm, Hard Rock Cafe)

As Leo and Martin was riding the elevator down to the parking garage, Leo handed the keys over to Martin.

- "You don't mind driving, do you?"

- "Not at all, but it's only fair to warn you: I'm not too good with a stick shift."

The blue Honda was parked on the third level, just as Jordan had said. A Wunderbaum dangled form the rear-view mirror. Both men got in and Martin turned the key. The starter engine turned slowly, but the car refused to start.

- "Get out of the car - NOW!", Leo yelled, but Martin was already on his way out.

He had seen 'The Pelican Brief' enough times to pick up the signs of someone tampering with the car. They barely made it to cover, before an explosion tossed the Honda 10 feet up in the air, slamming it against the ceiling. Several car alarms went off nearby. Leo managed to catch a glimpse of a black, unmarked Ford, screaming down the exit ramp.

- "Did you see the plates?", Martin asked, as he stood up.

- "I would have", Leo replied, "but there weren't any. You OK?"

- "Apart from a few minor bruises, I'm fine. Good thing we left all of our stuff in the Taurus. Otherwise it would have been toast by now."

- "We'd better call the Chief", Leo said as he dialed the number to Jordan's cellphone.

Meanwhile, Martin grabbed a fire extinguished from the wall and hosed down the burning car. The explosion had ripped off most of the roof and the seat on the driver's side was split in two. After poking around for a while, Martin found a small piece of the detonator.

- "Jordan? Leo here. Martin and I ran into some trouble."

- "What kind of trouble?"

- "Someone had placed a bomb in Tom's car. We both made it out in time, but the car is scrap."

Martin showed the detonator fragment to Leo.

"The detonator looks like something the CIA would use, but I need to have a closer look to be sure."

- "OK, we'll talk more when you get to Tom's place."

The phone call had Jordan worried. Someone wanted to make sure the device Tom had, would never make it to the Public.

When the police arrived, Martin explained what had happened, but left out the part about the CIA. One of the officers wanted to take them downtown for questioning, but after Leo flashed his badge, he changed his mind.

Luckily, there was an AVIS rental shop nearby, where the agents could requisition a new car, to take them to the Airforce Base.
